The Slow Regard of Silent Things

Discover #1 New York Times-bestselling Patrick Rothfuss’ epic fantasy universe of The Kingkiller Chronicle, in this illustrated companion novella, The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

“I just love the world of Patrick Rothfuss.” —Lin-Manuel Miranda

Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place.

Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes. And it gives the reader a chance to learn things that only Auri knows....

In this book, Patrick Rothfuss brings us into the world of one of The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story of a broken girl trying to live in a broken world.

While I appreciated that in the forward Patrick Rothfuss prefaces the story by saying "You might not want to buy this book", he is being both honest yet appealing to the defiant part of me that answers, "oh really, well we'll see about that". Having been a huge fan of his other books, I highly doubted I would agree with him. He later ends on a similar note at the back of the book saying it was not meant to be a typical story and is as eccentric meandering as the main character, and by that point I understood what he meant in the beginning better. Although I'm glad I read it and appreciated some of its moments, I couldn't help wishing that something more substantial had happened in the book. This is partly due to how much I like the world that it is set in and want to know what else is happening with other characters. Hopefully this book means that Auri will play a larger role in the last installment of the King Killer Chronicles and we learn how her special ways of seeing the world have outward effects.

Also, on a side note, this was bumped up to 3 stars due to the illustrations throughout, which were fun and gave it a little bit of extra flare.

Interesting book. Not for me but happy the author wrote it the way he did and made it true tonwhat he wanted. I'll read anything by him while I wait for him to finish the kingslayer chronicles.
