Verity, is that you?
Wait—no, sorry. Same premise, different book.
The Wife Upstairs felt like a reimagined version of Verity by Colleen Hoover. The similarities were hard to ignore—so much so that I did a quick Google search, and yep, Verity came first. So it’s safe to say this one gives off major copycat vibes.
That said, comparison aside, the book still had plenty of suspense and some unique twists that kept me turning pages. It’s one of those thrillers where you think you know what’s going on… but then something small shifts, and suddenly, you're questioning everything again.
If you’re going to enjoy this book, you have to separate it from Verity. Don’t go in expecting the same level of intensity or character complexity—just take it for what it is: a quick, twisty domestic thriller that delivers solid entertainment and a few satisfying “what the heck?!” moments.
I gave this one 3 stars because while it kept me intrigued and entertained, it didn’t quite hit the mark for originality. The pacing was solid, and there were a few moments that genuinely surprised me—but the overall plot felt very familiar (Verity fans, you’ll know what I mean).
Still, it's a quick read with a fun, twisted vibe. If you’re not looking for something groundbreaking and just want something bingeable with a bit of creep factor, it delivers.
I really enjoyed this thrilling retelling of Jane Eyre. I did feel a tad let down by the ending (I wanted bigger or more shocking) but overall it was a great thriller and kept me on my toes! I would recommend it to anyone looking for their next thriller.
Another twisted Freida story. Twisted.
⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (3.5 stars)
The Wife Upstairs gave me major Verity by Colleen Hoover vibes — dark secrets, a twisted marriage, and a wife whose story isn’t what it seems. Frieda McFadden kept me turning pages with her trademark short chapters and tension, but I couldn’t help feeling like I’d read a very similar story before. While the twists were engaging and the pacing fast, the similarities to Verity made it a little predictable at times. Still, if you enjoy domestic thrillers with unreliable narrators and shocking reveals, this is definitely worth the read!
