The Way You Make Me Feel

From the author of I Believe in a Thing Called Love, a young adult laugh-out-loud story of love, new friendships, and one unique food truck.

Clara Shin lives for pranks and disruption. When she takes one joke too far, her dad sentences her to a summer working on his food truck, the KoBra, alongside her uptight classmate Rose Carver. Not the carefree summer Clara had imagined. But maybe Rose isn't so bad. Maybe the boy named Hamlet (yes, Hamlet) crushing on her is pretty cute. Maybe Clara actually feels invested in her dad’s business. What if taking this summer seriously means that Clara has to leave her old self behind? With Maurene Goo's signature warmth and humor, The Way You Make Me Feel is a relatable story of falling in love and finding yourself in the places you’d never thought to look.

I picked this book up because I've read all the rest of Maurene Goo's books. But I'm gonna be real, when I first started it, I thought I wasn't going to finish. It seems sort of silly now. The reason I didn't want to finish was because the main character was pretty patently unlikeable. But I guess I don't have a ton of experience with the "main character is kind of a jerk and learns to be nicer" trope. I did this recently, too, with a Sarah Dessen book (Along for the Ride). I'm glad I stuck around for this book, though, because it gave out really big rewards. I think one of the things I like the best about Maurene Goo's books are the relationships between the main character and their parents, and, often, friends. I appreciate that the romance isn't the only thing in the book. I want a multi-faceted character who has many relationships, romantic or platonic, and who grows through those relationships. This book delivered, big time, while also making me pretty hungry for tacos and kimchi empanadas.

This book could not have been more adorable! I loved Clara so much and Hamlet is high school boyfriend goals! I listened to the audio and the narrator was really good! She really brought the story to life! I now want to visit The KoBra for some Korean/Brazilian fusion food!
