She knows what her happily ever after looks like. And it’s not him.

Cassia Park believes in soul mates. Fated love stories. It’s her family business, after all—for centuries, from Korea to Los Angeles, Park women have peered into clients’ past lives to find their one true love, their fated. This magical secret is why One & Only Matchmaking has a 100% guarantee…for everyone but Cassia.

For ten years, Cass has been searching for her fated, a man named Daniel Nam. But he’s still nowhere to be found.

And so, on the eve of her 40th birthday, Cass decides to do something for herself. She impulsively has a fling with Ellis. He’s twenty-eight, indecently handsome, and not destined to be the love of her life. But she’s surprised by their connection and their fling feels like something more—up to the moment he introduces her to his boss…Daniel Nam.

As she battles between fate and chance, head and heart, a family secret is revealed that will make her question everything she’s ever known. Cassia will have to decide if she’ll follow her fate…or make her own.

This was in the genre of mystical realism. I've only read one other book in the past year that qualifies as such, "The Phoenix Pencil Company". Both that one, and "One & Only", use ancient arts carried down through generations - this one, from Korea, and the PPC from China. "One & Only" focuses on the art of match-making and finding a person's fated, with whom they are destined to be, because they 'read faces' and know who their clients have been together with before, in past lives. Cassia Park is at the center of this family business, as the heir apparent to her grandmother. Cass is turning forty when the story opens, but hasn't yet found her fated. She knows what his name is - has known it since she was thirty and had her face 'read' by her grandmother. But no man by the name of Daniel Nam has been located, after extensively searching. Until he does - Daniel Nam Watson - who happens to be the boss of a younger man Cass just started seeing. And she really, likes the younger guy, Ellis - fireworks in bed, and all of that. However, Daniel, being her fated, and with her bio clock is ticking, what's a romantic heroine to do? She likes Daniel as well, and feels his forty-two is more simpatico with her stage in life, than twenty-eight year-old Ellis. How Cass navigates her course forward, makes this book such a delight to read. It's funny, poignant, and unearths a guarded family secret that almost has Cass giving up. But it's a wonderful happily ever-after story. I will look for more by Maurene Goo!
