The Unrequited

Layla Robinson is not crazy. She is suffering from unrequited love. But it's time to move on. No more stalking, no more obsessive calling.
What she needs is a distraction. The blue-eyed guy she keeps seeing around campus could be a great one--only he is the new poetry professor--the married poetry professor.
Thomas Abrams is a stereotypical artist--rude, arrogant, and broody--but his glares and taunts don't scare Layla. She might be bad at poetry, but she is good at reading between the lines. Beneath his prickly façade, Thomas is lonely, and Layla wants to know why. Obsessively.
Sometimes you do get what you want. Sometimes you end up in the storage room of a bar with your professor and you kiss him. Sometimes he kisses you back like the world is ending and he will never get to kiss you again. He kisses you until you forget the years of unrequited love; you forget all the rules, and you dare to reach for something that is not yours.

Thomas is close; the sun follows him wherever he goes500 books later, I think my ratings will still be as stingy or strict. But this just means that the books that I give 4/5 stars too are really good ones that you can be 100% sure of.
Whenever I asked for student x teacher trope, this book was always recommended which made me have high expectations but after reading it I'm kind of underwhelmed.
Also look who's reading books from her tbr shelf like a diligent reader she should be!! *points to self*
THIS IS NOT SPOILER FREE
When I say I want to read student x teacher, I mean I want to read the passion, the hiding behind doors, the stolen glances and forbidden touches. And this book had a lot of that including Thomas's dirty talking but I just couldn't relate to their chemistry.
It felt like Thomas was looking at her as someone to fill in the void that his wife couldn't give him and he grabbed everything Layla gave him selfishly, with a half foot out the door towards Haley. I understand the need to want things to be okay in his marriage with his kid and all but his indecisiveness was just not putting him in a good light.
Layla just seemed like a soul who yearned for any kind of connection especially after Caleb who left and so when Thomas appeared she absorbed him like a sponge. But it didn't feel like soulmates to me, it was just 2 people at the same spot coincidentally. I don't see why they fell for one another especially if they were just filling up the space where other people couldn't fill.
Could be others' cup of tea, not mine though. Oh well.
