What it really needed is to give us a few more breaks between descriptions. It's so much meta stuff! Everything is described. Events, people, personal outcomes, personalities. We know stuff happened and happens yet we don't really know who the people are. Every time we meet a new character we need a flashback to go over their whole life. People don't speak to each other instead they hold big speeches like robots or rather fake historical figures.

He for example claims a slave looks aggressive in his face and hence is. We then assume he's actually a good soul as surely there is a twist? Yet we don't see him experience anything at this point. The description is what we have to go on so I'm sitting here making up heroic survival stories on behalf of the author. With the constant flashbacks it's hard to get interested in anything.

I like the history, but that's it. The real escape tales are extremely fascinating and this fake one has more readers than they have which is a great shame. I rather read the real history.
