The Surgeon: A Rizzoli & Isles Novel

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A briskly paced, terrifically suspenseful work that steadily builds toward a tense and terrifying climax.”—People (Page-turner of the week)
ONE OF TIME’S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME
He slips into homes at night and walks silently into bedrooms where women lie sleeping, about to awaken to a living nightmare. The precision of his methods suggests that he is a deranged man of medicine, prompting the Boston newspapers to dub him “The Surgeon.” Led by Detectives Thomas Moore and Jane Rizzoli, the cops must consult the victim of a nearly identical crime: Two years ago, Dr. Catherine Cordell fought back and filled an attacker before he could complete his assault. Now this new killer is re-creating, with chilling accuracy, the details of Cordell’s ordeal. With every new murder he seems to be taunting her, cutting ever closer, from her hospital to her home. And neither Moore nor Rizzoli can protect Cordell from a ruthless hunter who somehow understands—and savors—the secret fears of every woman he kills.
“[A] top-grade thriller . . . Sharp characters stitch your eye to the page. An all-nighter.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Creepy . . . will exert a powerful grip on readers.”—Chicago Tribune

Great thriller. Compelling story...but the crime involves SA and torture of women. When I read this years ago it didn't bother me, but now the crimes seem exploitative. So much needless hate aimed at women.
This is the origin of Rizzoli and Isles, although in this book the focus is on Rizzoli's partner, Moore. Standard serial killer versus cop thriller. I like the prickly Rizzoli and can relate to her experiences with family. men, and her professional life.

I kind of just read this entire book in one go, so I clearly enjoyed it. It was interesting to read about some of the characters I already know about from the TV show, even though Rizzoli wasn't a main character and Isles isn't mentioned at all in this book. But in the show, we hear about Jane's encounters with Holt, so reading all about this past history in this book was quite informative. This was your typical murder mystery book without anything particularly separating it from other books in the genre, but it was incredibly gripping and I had to keep reading because I just wanted to know what happened next, which was why I ended up spending the entire day reading it until I finished.
I'm definitely interested in reading more of the series, though I was really most compelled by the doctor character who was the main victim/target of Holt's murders, and I'm kind of sad she won't be in the next books since her story is now complete. (But I'm glad she's happy now!)

I lost more than a few nights' sleep due to my inability to put the book down for the night! Great page turner. Once I finished reading it, I headed back to the library to pick up three more of her books!
