Choose Me

By Gary Braver and Tess Gerritsen

From New York Times bestseller Tess Gerritsen and acclaimed thriller writer Gary Braver comes a sexy murder mystery about a reckless affair and dangerous secrets. Taryn Moore is young, beautiful, and brilliant...so why would she kill herself? When Detective Frankie Loomis arrives on the scene to investigate the girl's fatal plunge from her apartment balcony, she knows in her gut there's more to the story. Her instincts are confirmed when surprise information is revealed that could have been reason enough for Taryn's suicide--or a motive for her murder. To English professor Jack Dorian, Taryn was the ultimate fantasy: intelligent, adoring, and completely off limits. But there was also a dark side to Taryn, a dangerous streak that threatened those she turned her affections to--including Jack. And now that she's dead, his problems are just beginning. After Frankie uncovers a trove of sordid secrets, it becomes clear that Jack may know the truth. He is guilty of deception, but is he capable of cold-blooded murder?

Meh??? This was an ok read. At least it was a quick read. Kind of a tired theme though: smart, gorgeous and deeply disturbed coed has an affair with her married professor who is almost twice her age. Classic story of what happens when married professors can't keep it in their pants. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!!!

I didn't like and/or connect with any of the characters except the two cops. The author tried to make the story more interesting by weaving in a lot of Greek and classical literature stories of star crossed lovers. SERIOUSLY??? These were not star crossed lovers. They were an old and ridiculous example of the young impressionable woman with abandoned daddy issues and an older, stupid, horny man who resented being neglected by his smart, accomplished and successful wife.

This is the first Tess Gerritsen book that I've read, although, hubby has been a HUGE fan of Gerritsen's Rizzoli & Isles series for years and is always recommending the series to me. While I have never adding the series to my to-read list, I have checked out Gerritsen's library of books and it became obvious to me that Gerritsen's previous occupation as a surgeon is reflected in quite a bit of her work.

While her work is clearly encased in the genre of crime thrillers, they seem to be divided between medical thrillers and romantic thrillers. It's not that I don't like these types of books but it's been my experience that unless they're written really well, most medical thrillers can end up being as gory, gruesome and graphic as a lot of horror stories (which I really do try and avoid) and so many romantic thrillers end up being more romance than thrillers. That's not to say I don't enjoy a little romance but I prefer more thriller than romance.

Anyway, I did end up adding a few Gerritsen books to my to-read list and, hopefully, the others will be more interesting than this one. Who knows, maybe I should just dive into Gerritsen's R&I series. Hubby says I would probably like it and it does seem to be really popular.

Choose me is told through the lens of different characters and from before and after the central death, which ends up being a fascinating way to tease out the truth of the story. obsession, investigation, feelings of inferiority, abandonment, literary discussion all play out in the tale
