The Secret Keeper: A Novel

From the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling author of Homecoming, The Distant Hours, The Forgotten Garden, and The House at Riverton comes a spellbinding novel of family secrets, murder, and enduring love.

During a picnic at her family’s farm in the English countryside, sixteen-year-old Laurel Nicolson witnesses a shocking crime, a crime that challenges everything she knows about her adored mother, Dorothy. Now, fifty years later, Laurel and her sisters are meeting at the farm to celebrate Dorothy’s ninetieth birthday. Realizing that this is her last chance to discover the truth about that long-ago day, Laurel searches for answers that can only be found in Dorothy’s past. Clue by clue, she traces a secret history of three strangers from vastly different worlds thrown together in war-torn London—Dorothy, Vivien, and Jimmy—whose lives are forever after entwined. A gripping story of deception and passion, The Secret Keeper will keep you enthralled to the last page.

This book is not typical of WWII novels and has a twist at the end that caught me completely by surprise. The characters are well drawn and completely believable and I fell in love with every one of their quirks and idiosyncrasies. The story alternates between the past and the present bringing both story lines along to a terrifically satisfying convergence. There is enough mystery and suspense to command your attention and make you wonder what's going to happen next. I highly recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book and the thoughts it provoked about my own childhood. The interesting thoughts about sibling order and their relationships.
One of my favorite quotes was "The landscape of ones childhood is more vibrant than any other, doesn't matter where it was or what it looked like, the sights and sounds imprinted differently from those encountered later - they became part of a person - inescapable".

Loved this book! I am not going to retell the plot (way too long anyway) but I will say, Morton once again does a great job of writing a suspenseful story with great characters. There are several interesting plot twists that I did not see coming (love that!). The story goes from pre WWII, the war, the 60's & present day, set in London & the English countryside. This is a great read about friendship, love, betrayal & deception!

4.5 rolled on up!

Kate Morton writes historical fiction unlike any other author I've read. I have a real appreciation for how she weaves the mysteries of the past and present, and unravels them in sync with each other. Quick becoming one of my favorite authors.
