The Lake House: A Novel

From the New York Times bestselling author of Homecoming comes a “moody, suspenseful page-turner” (People, Best Book Pick) filled with mystery and spellbinding secrets.
Living on her family’s idyllic lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, and precociously talented sixteen-year-old who loves to write stories.
One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. He is never found, and the family is torn apart, the house abandoned.
Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as a novelist. Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old Edevane estate—now crumbling and covered with vines. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone...yet more present than ever.
A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies from a masterful storyteller, The Lake House is an enthralling, thoroughly satisfying read.

The Lake House by Kate Morton
492 pages
What’s it about?
This is a good old-fashioned mystery by English writer Kate Morton. I read “The Forgotten Garden” a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think of her books as an easy treat!
What did I think?
This book started off a little slow, but did not disappoint in the end.
Should you read it?
This is just a fun book to read. The plot pulls you along, the mystery keeps you wondering, and the English countryside is a great setting. If you like your books all tied up in a bow at the end- then you will love Kate Morton.
Quote-
“All of London passed through those tunnels, a steady flow of humanity in its many weird and wonderful forms, and among them Alice slipped like a ghost. To age was contemptible, but the single silver lining was the cloak of invisibility gifted by the years. Nobody noticed the little old lady sitting primly in a corner of the carriage, handbag on her knee.”

3.5 stars rounded up for the beautiful writing. Kate Morton does a fabulous job with dual timelines- she gave us two interesting main characters and two interesting storylines/mysteries in The Lake House. It’s also very atmospheric and I want to visit Cornwall after reading this. That being said it was not my favorite Kate Morton as it was a bit too detailed and the ending was just too buttoned up in my opinion. The Secret Keeper remains my favorite of hers followed by The Forgotten Garden.
June 2018 selection
I do enjoy Kate Morton and The Lake House did not disappoint. I often find going back and forth in time difficult for authors to pull off but in this case it enabled her to pull together details that would have been challenging or boring otherwise. Fabulous setting.
Wow! love this author, this is the second book of hers that I have read and the ending brought tears. incredibly crafted, weaves the past and present seamlessly, leaving you on the edge of your seat seeking answers.
