The Rumor: A Novel

A friendship is tested in this "thrilling" page-turner from New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand (Us Weekly).

Madeline King and Grace Pancik are best friends and the envy of Nantucket for their perfect marriages, their beautiful kids, their Saturday night double dates with their devoted husbands. But this summer, something's changed, and if there's anything Nantucket likes better than cocktails on the beach at sunset, it's a good rumor.

And rumor has it... that Madeline, a novelist, is battling writer's block, with a deadline looming, bills piling up, and blank pages driving her to desperation -- and a desperately bad decision; and that Grace, hard at work to transform her backyard into a garden paradise, has been collaborating a bit more closely than necessary with her ruggedly handsome landscape architect.

As the gossip escalates, and they have the possible loss of the happy lives they've worked so hard to create, Grace and Madeline try mightily to set the record straight -- but the truth might be even worse than rumor has it.

My first EH book. I overall enjoyed the book and will read more by this author, there were just some things I wasn’t wild about (and if it feels a pattern, probably won’t read a LOT more by her). But first, I was in need of a “lighter” read; The Rumor filled that. I liked the slow build and lead into the occasional surprises. I liked hearing from all of the characters. Early in it was reminiscent of Big Little Lies, and having recently finished/really enjoying that book, I was digging the familiarity. What I didn’t care for was how neatly everything seemed to wrap up. It sort of felt like watching a Hallmark movie. I guess I wanted some shock and awe v. neat and tidy - with a bow on top.

Definitely a fluff-read! No need to tax your brain or contemplate the story. For me, not the best of her books.

A super easy, compulsive read but nothing extraordinary. Typical Hilderbrand Nantucket beach book. Lots of island people, lots of money & lots of gossip. Told from multiple viewpoints, the story basically follows the lives of Grace & Madeline, best friends on the island, and their families. The ending felt rushed & I just couldn't believe the twin sisters' reaction to their father & the situation he got himself into. The other thing I didn't like (and other people didn't either based on the reviews I read) was the ridiculous names used in the book:Calgary, Brick, Allegra, Hollis, Bluto, Benton, Sterling & Bridger to name a few! It was distracting & I couldn't keep straight who was a boy or a girl. But I really didn't care enough about the characters to figure it out. 2.5 stars. ⭐️

Listened to this on audiobook. Typical rumor gossip story of people on Nantucket. Cute story but no real twist or turns in the story. The ending was flat. It ended like you expected.
