"The glowing ghosts of the radium girls haunt us still." --NPR Books

Discover the gripping and inspiring true story of The Radium Girls, a groundbreaking work by acclaimed author Kate Moore. Immerse yourself in this compelling narrative that unravels the extraordinary lives of these fearless women who fought against all odds.

The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War.

Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" are the luckiest alive--until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.

But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women's cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America's early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come.

With meticulous research and a keen eye for detail, Kate Moore delves into the lives of these remarkable individuals, capturing their resilience, strength, and unwavering determination. Through their stories, she exposes the shocking negligence and corporate cover-ups that plagued the radium industry, ultimately sparking a revolution in workplace safety.

The Radium Girls is a masterful blend of historical account and heartfelt tribute. Moore's vivid prose brings these forgotten heroines back to life, ensuring that their sacrifices and triumphs are forever etched in our collective memory. As you turn each page, you'll be captivated by their indelible legacy and inspired by their enduring spirit.

The Radium Girls is a must-read for history enthusiasts, feminists, and anyone seeking a remarkable story of resilience and empowerment.

The author is an incredibly thorough researcher which contributes to the length and incredible detail of her books. I found it challenging to stay connected to the story when presented this way, but the women's history is fascinating and so very important.

While a horrible part of history… I loved this book. And the author did a phenomenal job of highlighting each woman and their story. The one thing is… it’s super long and redundant. I admire why she highlights each woman and their story but it makes for a slightly frustrating read to feel you’re reading the same thing over and over. However, I still loved it.

Radium girls covered the story of the young women employeed to paint watch hand dials with Radium, to make them glow. They're young, they're paid well and they glow after work. Their method of flawless radium paint lines... Lick, dip, stick... repeat. Subject to investing Radium through painting techniques leaves these glowing women riddled with deteriorating bones as a result of alpha radiation. The book covers the lengthy legal cases of the women who used their voices to fight back against their employer, resulting in being the first workers to receive compensation for an occupational disease. The book is a history lesson we never got to learn about.
