A very great book to read and learn so much about the trials the women faced and the importance of their story.
What an important story. And as narrative non-fiction, it rolled right along. The story of these unwitting young women, some as young as 14, painting clock dials with radium and using no protective equipment. They were trained to use their mouths to shape the paintbrush in a fine tip, so that they could do the delicate painting. 'lip, dip, paint' was their work mantra. I can't believe I never heard of this story until a friend of mine read this book. It's an incredible read! The anguish these women went through is incredibly gut-wrenching to read but their story needs to be known.
I initially heard a podcast episode about radium poisoning and from there discovered this book. One of the many questions I have is HOW IS THIS NOT TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES?! The amount of research that was done for this book is beyond impressive and I’m so grateful that it gives a voice to the many victims of radium poisoning, primarily the women of Ottawa. Highly recommend.
I found this book very different from anything I've ever read previously. It evoked such emotion with the details it revealed throughout and was both highly readable and thrilling. These women deserve to be recognized for the huge sacrifices they made, all they asked was the same as most of us do now - a steady job with money coming in, yet, what they got turned into something else entirely.
