The Maid

"The Maid is a masterful, charming mystery that will touch your heart in ways you could never expect. . . . This is the smart, quirky, uplifting read we need." --Ashley Audrain, #1 bestselling author of The Push

A charmingly eccentric hotel maid discovers a guest murdered in his bed. Solving the mystery will turn her once orderly world upside down in this utterly original debut.

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misinterprets the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has had to navigate life's complexities all by herself. No matter--she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly's orderly life is turned on its head the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself very dead in his bed. Before she knows what's happening, Molly's unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black--but will they be able to find the real killer before it's too late?

A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different--and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

Ugh. So inconsistent and unbelievable. I am not really sure where to start. Molly the maid is whatever suits the author's whim in the story. Native when that fits but incredibly conniving and ruthless when that works better. But we are supposed to believe she is an entirely simple person. I don't want to include too many spoilers but almost nothing she does seems possible based on what she had just done in the previous pages.

Loved the unexpected twist at the end. Great way to be placed in the mind if a learning different person.

Comforting cosy mystery. I loved the main character and her quirks. Her literal interpretation of her world is refreshing, but in the middle of the book her naiveté becomes frustrating. Molly's sense of decorum and rules allow her to live her life in some comfort, but they become a hindrance later in the story. Not sure if this is an entirely accurate portrayal of someone on the spectrum. The character is reminiscent of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, and I am not sure if that is a positive. Overall a pleasant interlude, no real surprises, but a very cosy ending for the characters. Makes me want to clean, there is even a schedule in the back of the book.

Not as good as I expected. Even though it had a twist, it was very predictable at times and the characters should have been better developed. Nothing compared to Agatha Christie or Colombo, both of which are referenced in the book.

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did! I loved Molly the Maid, and the story was a fun mystery while being pretty hilarious in parts!
