Wow! This is as poignant today as when it was published in 1949. It's a fantastic example of how a great writer can vividly convey so much in a short story. Irony, illusion, and symbolism are the tools Jackson uses in this compelling, cautionary tale of mob mentality and how a society can hold on to old traditions.

This was a good read but not particularly interesting. I think a lot of classics suffer when someone from the present reads them because media has already used them as a stepping stone and either paid homage to them or improved on their ideas, so whatever was revolutionary back then becomes old.
