The Lake

The instant New York Times bestseller!

Hot on the heels of The Twin, the undisputed queen of YA thrillers is back with a scary and suspenseful read about a summer camp filled with dark secrets.

Esme and Kayla once were campers at Camp Pine Lake. Now they're back as counselors-in-training. Esme loves the little girls in her cabin and thinks it's funny how scared they are of everything--the woods, the bugs, the boys...even swimming in the lake. It reminds her of how she and Kayla used to be. Before...

Because Esme and Kayla did something terrible when they were campers. Something they've kept a secret all these years. They vow that this summer will be awesome. Two months of sun, s'mores, and flirting with the cute boy counselors. But then they get a message:
THE LAKE NEVER FORGETS.

The secret they've kept buried for so many years is about to resurface.

"[T]he strong buildup...leads to a shockingly satisfying finale. An eerie thriller reminiscent of summer horror movies that will keep readers on edge."--Kirkus

"Pays homage to classic summer camp slasher films...horror fans will likely appreciate this paranoia-fueled tale."--Publishers Weekly

To me the book was a tad slow and drawn out toward the end. HOWEVER, this book was definitely an eerie read that left me on edge. When I got to chapter 27, I found it so scary and omg dolls???
This book is very good if you're a reader who enjoys spooky books in a forest. However, If you don't enjoy cliffhangers, you may want to skip this read as I threw the book when I finished it. (But for real it really is a good book)

Happy reading :)) <3

𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝕃𝕒𝕜𝕖 - Nᴀᴛᴀsʜᴀ Pᴿᴇsᴛᴏɴ ⭐ ( 3.5 / 10 ) That quote sums up a few of the books I've been reading lately. 🙄 Two. Two books. This one and ACOTR but hmmm neither here nor there. Anyway, so first. Let me say The Cellar was great by Natasha Preston so I know she can do good books. This one right here. Disliked it so much I almost stopped and tossed it. I didn't. It pains me to not finish a book. So when you see I did not. It's on a level. Anyway! I gave up the two stars because I did run around on guesses of whodunnit becausd it couldnt possibly be THAT obvious... I was wrong, it was. Anyway i still guessed to entertain myself. The main characters Esme & Kayla I just didn't care for them at all. Esme was too paranoid and scary about everything, and Kayla was too much of an asshole to her so called best friend. Honestly, I just didnt care enough about either of them to be the leads in this but here they were. The actual person I cared most for was briefly touched on in passing throughout the book and then full introduced toward the end. Gimme a book on them and I may consider reading it... But again like I said. Did not care for anything really in this book. Good premise and idea. Terrible follow through, like M. Night Shyamalan. It was what it was, but Ms. Preston is on punishment for a minute. 𝔹𝕠𝕣𝕖𝕕 ℝ𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝘑𝘢𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘺 𝘖𝘶𝘵

I try not to be overly harsh as a rule, but I genuinely cannot understand how this was published. The writing is so corny, the pacing was boring, the *twist* was downright absurd.

Nope, not for me. The characters were flat, the ending was so rushed, and the miscommunication trope drives me crazy

This was my first thriller, and I have to say it's not my favorite genre. I agree it was a slow start for me to get into, but once I finally got immersed in the reading, it grew on me. You can tell it is YA. Most things were predictable. Wish the ending was a bit better.
