The Lake

The instant New York Times bestseller!

Hot on the heels of The Twin, the undisputed queen of YA thrillers is back with a scary and suspenseful read about a summer camp filled with dark secrets.

Esme and Kayla once were campers at Camp Pine Lake. Now theyโ€™re back as counselors-in-training. Esme loves the little girls in her cabin and thinks itโ€™s funny how scared they are of everythingโ€”the woods, the bugs, the boys...even swimming in the lake. It reminds her of how she and Kayla used to be. Before...

Because Esme and Kayla did something terrible when they were campers. Something theyโ€™ve kept a secret all these years. They vow that this summer will be awesome. Two months of sun, sโ€™mores, and flirting with the cute boy counselors. But then they get a message:
THE LAKE NEVER FORGETS.

The secret theyโ€™ve kept buried for so many years is about to resurface.

โ€œ[T]he strong buildupโ€ฆleads to a shockingly satisfying finale. An eerie thriller reminiscent of summer horror movies that will keep readers on edge.โ€โ€”Kirkus

"Pays homage to classic summer camp slasher films...horror fans will likely appreciate this paranoia-fueled tale."โ€”Publishers Weekly

I have been enjoying psychological thrillers and have eaten through just about all of Freida McFadden's books. I was looking for an author who could keep my attention like Freida did and I stumbled upon Natasha Preston. While reading this book, at first, I was thinking "this is either going to be a 3 star or a 5 star." Some parts of the book I was jumping out of my seat- eyes wide open- swearing about how the hell I didn't see that coming. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking for more Natasha Preston to devour. I like her writing style and found the book easy to read. I found the vocabulary to not be too challenging, which I enjoy. I am not interested in looking at a dictionary every 5 seconds to figure out what the descriptive words mean. I felt a lot of emotions while reading this book and even found myself feeling a little scared! I am definitely someone who is interested in psychological thrillers over horror and if you are too, I suggest you pop open this read. My one complaint is the feel of the book itself. It was a soft cover however the book had a matte feel to it- which made me feel like I needed to put lotion on my hands. (I am a weirdo).

In my opinion everything was going well until the ending. The ending just felt so rushed. I feel like this book would be better if she took more time to write the ending.

I love all her books there just so perfect when you want a good short thriller read in the fall. This story specifically is SO good, the twist at the end is insane

To me the book was a tad slow and drawn out toward the end. HOWEVER, this book was definitely an eerie read that left me on edge. When I got to chapter 27, I found it so scary and omg dolls???
This book is very good if you're a reader who enjoys spooky books in a forest. However, If you don't enjoy cliffhangers, you may want to skip this read as I threw the book when I finished it. (But for real it really is a good book)

Happy reading :)) <3

Two books. This one and ACOTR but hmmm neither here nor there. Anyway, so first. Let me say The Cellar was great by Natasha Preston so I know she can do good books. This one right here. Disliked it so much I almost stopped and tossed it. I didn't. It pains me to not finish a book. So when you see I did not. It's on a level. Anyway! I gave up the two stars because I did run around on guesses of whodunnit becausd it couldnt possibly be THAT obvious... I was wrong, it was. Anyway i still guessed to entertain myself. The main characters Esme & Kayla I just didn't care for them at all. Esme was too paranoid and scary about everything, and Kayla was too much of an asshole to her so called best friend. Honestly, I just didnt care enough about either of them to be the leads in this but here they were. The actual person I cared most for was briefly touched on in passing throughout the book and then full introduced toward the end. Gimme a book on them and I may consider reading it... But again like I said. Did not care for anything really in this book. Good premise and idea. Terrible follow through, like M. Night Shyamalan. It was what it was, but Ms. Preston is on punishment for a minute.
