With the council closing down Hallewell’s Bureau of Curiosities after Viktor’s death, Balthazar needs help cleaning out the treasures. Despite his grumpiness and seeming lack of appreciation, Cassie is determined to help. Among the items found is a clock that Balthazar insists is cursed. As Cassie realizes Balthazar’s attitude comes from grief, she’s able to see past his prickliness. Cassie also comes to terms with her deepening feelings for Faye, and makes her peace with the end of her previous relationship.

The third book in the Cobblestone Coven series explores grief in its different forms. The bulk of it concerns Balthazar’s grief at the loss of his guardian, Viktor. Despite Cassie’s efforts to win him over, he keeps her at bay to avoid feeling attachment again. This perspective on the part of a familiar is an interesting take, and one that I haven’t seen in other paranormal series. The deep bond between a familiar and their witch would certainly be affected when one dies. Balthazar’s softer side comes out a few times as he starts to let Cassie in. I also liked how Cassie made peace with her past and accepted that holding on to the deities from that time were part of the blocking of her magic. I’m invested in seeing her come into her true self as she moves forward. She is starting to accept her feelings for Faye go deeper than friendship and considers how to handle that. Faye and Cassie are so compatible and I’m looking forward to those developments as well.
