The Nerdy Narrative

Stephen Graham Jones is one of my top favorite authors, which means I automatically purchase anything he writes. THE BABYSITTER LIVES was an immediate preorder as soon as I saw it announced, even though I was a little disappointed it was audio only, as I am a big lover of immersion reading.

This one should have been a DNF.

My biggest regret with this one is that I kept going, hoping that SGJ would work his literary magic that would completely turn this narrative on its head and make it magnificent. That's what I'm used to when reading this author's works and my expectations were set high as a result. Two hours into the audiobook, I was already bored. Four hours in, still bored. The end, I was left feeling let down because I know SGJ is capable of so much more.

THE BABYSITTER LIVES is about high school senior Charlotte and the night she babysits for a new family, the Wilbanks, who have a set of twins, Ron and Desi. Come to find out, their house has a history of violence. So, a babysitter at a new, creepy and potentially haunted house - sounds like a fantastic premise for a horror novel, right? Sadly, no. NONE of the characters were interesting to me. Unless you count the ones that started the rumors surrounding the Wilbanks house - honestly, I would have loved if we'd just gotten a short story about THAT. The plot - boring. The story dragged and dragged and I just didn't care. The ending? Made me facepalm.

This hurts because I wanted to love this one, but I have to be honest about my reading experience. Here's hoping DON'T FEAR THE REAPER erases the memory of this one from my mind, lol.

Spooky and weird. I wasn't able to stop listening. It has left me creeped out. I'd recommend it for horror fans.
