DNF at 55% so I’m going to mark this one in particular as read. I usually don’t but I will for this book.
First, apparently there is a lot in this book that calls back to a trilogy this author wrote which would have been helpful to know since I didn’t read that trilogy. The way I understand it, they aren’t directly connected but there are things better explained in whatever that trilogy is that could have been explained here too.
Second, I really wanted to love this book. A middle-aged woman pirate? Yes. Learn a little more about the followers of Islam? Absolutely! Incorporate some fantasy in there? Heck yeah! And it’s beautifully written but falls very flat. I’m not sure why but I found myself not eager to finish.
Third, that dialogue sometimes steps away from the intended genre and slips into a somewhat modern-like tone that took me out a little.
Fourth, I wasn’t cheering for anyone! Not one character.
This wasn’t for me, personally, but I definitely think that if you’re interested you should give it a try! You may end up loving it!!
