That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon (Mead Mishaps, 1)

By Kimberly Lemming

Spice trader Cinnamon's quiet life is turned upside down when she ends up on a quest with a fiery demon, in this irreverently quirky rom-com fantasy that is sweet, steamy, and funny as hell.

All she wanted to do was live her life in peace--maybe get a cat, expand the family spice farm. Really, anything that didn't involve going on an adventure where an orc might rip her face off. But they say the goddess has favorites, and if so, Cin is clearly not one of them.

After Cin saves the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, Fallon reveals that all he really wants to do is kill an evil witch enslaving his people. And who can blame him? But now he's dragging Cinnamon along for the ride whether she likes it or not. On the bright side, at least he keeps burning off his shirt....

This is a very cute book, and was entertaining. Personally I would have like some more time to establish the universe and the rules of this fantasy world. After they were done in the swamp (which was my favorite part) everything just happened so quickly. Cute story that is worth the read, but I would probably not give it a re-read.

A fluffy, cozy (steamy at times) adventure! Fallon and Cin have such a fun dynamic and their banter is so amusing. There are definitely times in this book where it felt like small details were overlooked in favor of the bigger picture but the book still stands strong as long as you don't read too far into everything. I found the plot to be interesting and I enjoyed how they had a set mission (the chalices), this made the plot easy to follow and allowed the reader to focus in more on the relationships between the characters rather than just trying to understand what was going on. I will definitely be picking up more books by Lemming!

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon is a fantasy romance that has thrown a cozy tavern comedy, a monster romance, and a bottle of wine into a blender. The title alone promised a ridiculous good time, but only parts of the book delivered on that promise. The tone reminded me so much of Legends & Lattes that I kept comparing the two while reading. Unfortunately, this felt more like a lighter imitation than something that built its own memorable world. Cinnamon works as a spice trader who accidentally gets dragged into an adventure after saving Fallon from captivity. Fallon spends most of the novel shirtless, flirty, and eager to prove demons have excellent stamina. From there, the story turns into a road trip packed with witches, monsters, magical fights, and constant flirting. The humor carried much of the book for me because the actual adventure rarely felt exciting. The fight scenes blurred together fast and most of the danger felt low stakes despite the constant threats surrounding the characters. Cinnamon is written as capable and fearless, but her decisions often made her seem oddly naive instead of sharp or intimidating. Fallon easily became the more entertaining half of the romance because his confidence and teasing personality added energy whenever the story started dragging. Hazel Addison’s narration worked fine for the audiobook. Nothing about the performance stood out strongly afterward. Her pacing stayed smooth and easy to follow matching the breezy tone of the novel. That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon feels aimed directly at readers who want funny fantasy romance, monster love interests, cozy adventure vibes, and spice without taking anything too seriously. I can see why so many readers adore it. Sadly, I spent most of the book wishing I had just reread Legends & Lattes instead.

This is more a me-thing than a book-thing. Too quirky for the sake of being quirky for my taste, which I probably should have known from the book titles alone.

The vibes were ridiculous and fun. Fallon the hot dragon demon and Cin the quiet brown skin spice trader, were all wit and vibes. I can't wait till the next adventure.
