This book... is captivating. I was surprised a bit, knowing Jacqueline Carey's writing to find such varied creatures, both humanoid and animal alike, in this book. It turned in to something totally different than what I was expecting but in such a delicate way. The story ebbs and flows so naturally. I listened to this on my drives to and from work (I have a 1.5 hr drive one way... *sigh*) and I was captivated the entire time. I have loved Jacqueline Carey's books since I was 15 years old... I'm now 33. She is by far, my favorite author. I can't wait to see what she has coming next.
Kai reminded me very much of Loup Garron from her Santa Olivia duo. If only in warrior characteristics. I've read many books with strong female leads and warrior types, but somehow, Jacqueline Carey blows them all out of the water. They are strong, formidable and true to themselves, while not losing the depth and finesse that only a woman can bring to the table. Truly two of my favorite characters in literature.

I hadn't read any of Jacqueline Carey since Kushiel's Dart, but I was excited when I came across this sitting on a shelf at the bookstore. It did not disappoint. Carey has built another well thought out and fully immersive fantasy world. The action is enough to keep the reader interested, but the reoccurring themes of gender and identity are also compelling.
