Solito

A memoir as gripping as it is moving, Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. Solito is Javier Zamora’s story, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.

This is harrowing tale of 9 year old Javier’s journey from El Salvador to “La USA” where he was reunited with his parents. I would highly recommend reading this memoir over the sensationalized novel American Dirt in order to understand what people endure to come across the border. The writing is lyrical and descriptive. As other reviewers have mentioned I did find all of the Spanish distracting since I don’t know the language and didn’t want to google everything.

What an incredible, moving story, and that he was able to carry those memories and write about them years later... I hope he finds his "family" through this book!

The author provides his POV as his 9 year old self, as he traveled three countries in an attempt to reach his parents in the US. In some ways it read like poetry and in others a firest person narrative.

We have to find a better way to care for each other despite borders. We have lost our humanity.
