Except Bryden is nowhere to be seen. It’s as if she just walked out.
How can she have disappeared from her own home? And did she even leave the building at all?

Readers say *She Didn’t See It Coming* is a fast-paced, gripping thriller with layered narration that deepens the intrigue but can also frustrate with...
Bryden Frost, a devoted wife and mother, mysteriously disappears from her luxury condo, leaving behind her car, phone, and keys. Detective Jayne Salter takes on the case and quickly realizes that Bryden’s perfect life may not have been so perfect after all. Secrets about her strained marriage and a suspicious encounter with a man named Derek Gardner begin to surface, casting doubt on everyone around her. As the investigation unfolds, shocking revelations lead to a twist no one could have predicted.
Shari Lapena always knows how to reel me in, and this thriller was no different. The pacing was sharp and the shifting perspectives had me questioning everyone’s version of the truth. Like who didn't see it coming???
I found myself constantly changing my suspicions as the story unraveled and literally just when I thought I had it figured out, another reveal threw me off track and I'm like ok, wtf is going on! It’s the kind of book that begs to be discussed because every character has secrets worth dissecting, so part of me wishes that this had been a bookclub pick bc I know the convo would have been wildddd.
If you live for domestic drama, shady neighbors, and those jaw-dropping twists, this is absolutely your vibe.
Should you read it? 100%. Clear your schedule.
Trigger Warnings: murder, violence, infidelity, stalking, alcohol use, emotional manipulation, and themes of distrust/paranoia
I don’t know what to think. This twisty mystery had a lot going on. Some of the side stories were distracting and just served as misdirection. I was kind of amazed to find out who the killer turned out to be. It felt like it came out of left field. And talk about dysfunctional. Not one character escapes that label. I would like to see Detective Jayne Salter solve another crime, though. And there are some loose ends that could be tied up in a sequel.
This was the Author's Shari Lapena's best book in my opinion! It had me at go! I had my suspension regarding certain characters, but never truly guessed who was truly guilty! I look forward to more books by this author!
I expected better considering the calibre of the author. It was obvious to me from the beginning - with a very weak ending.
When a devoted mother vanishes from her luxury condo without a trace—leaving behind her phone, keys, and open laptop—what seemed like a perfect life begins to unravel. As detectives race against time, suspicion spreads through the building, exposing cracks in Bryden and Sam’s seemingly flawless marriage and revealing that those closest to them may be hiding the truth
Told through multiple perspectives, this novel gives readers access to a wide range of voices—including Bryden’s husband, Sam Frost; her sister, Lizzie Houser; and Detective Jayne Salter, along with several minor characters. This layered narration adds depth, though not all of the narrators are reliable, which creates both intrigue and frustration.
The characters are well developed and evolve naturally over the course of the story, making it easy to stay invested in their lives and motivations. The pacing is quick, and the gradual release of information keeps the suspense high, making it a true page-turner.
However, the heavy reliance on unreliable narration ultimately feels like a drawback. While it’s possible to form theories about what happened and why, the reader is never given quite enough concrete information to fully piece things together. This makes the resolution feel less satisfying, especially with a few loose ends and an open-ended conclusion that leaves some questions unanswered.
That said, the story itself is engaging and full of tension. I especially appreciated the clever connection to the title—it works on two levels, reflecting both the victim’s fate and the surprising ending. Overall, an entertaining and suspenseful read, even if it doesn’t fully deliver on the mystery-solving experience.
