I really enjoyed this novel. My first thoughts are actually a recommendation for anyone who chooses to actually look at my reviews: Don't always ignore the sales at your local library. I was able to procure 2 "Sharpe's" novels for about $1. I could have gotten more, but I had never heard of the "Sharpe's" series until a stumbled across the library sale so I thought better to be safe than sorry. I picked up the first two in chronological order. Normally I'm an advocate for reading things as they come out, but considering there are about 24 books in this series, and considering how well they've been developed, I thought it best just to pick up from Sharpe's beginning and move through the series.

The book itself starts out just fine and interesting and I found myself reading quite a bit for the first couple of days. Once Sharpe and Lawford took off for Mysore, I found myself becoming a little less interested for a few chapters but I'm glad I stuck with it simply for the prison break toward the end and how completely hardcore Sharpe becomes by the end of the book.
The characters are appealing and I found myself really connected with them. I also understood the hate that Sharpe (and pretty much everyone else) had for Sergeant Hakeswell and I also found myself as upset and disappointed with Sharpe and Lawford as Colonel Gudine was when he discovered who they really were.

Overall, I was quite pleased with this random find in our local library's sale. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys military and/or historical fiction.

I'm really looking forward to checking out the next book in the series.
