This book left way too many unanswered questions. It also took a completely different direction than I thought it would and it almost felt like two different stories. If was a fun and quick read, but I’m disappointed. I really was hoping that Breezy would return home. I hoped we would find out who did this to her and how. I hoped for an explanation on the birds. But these were all left open. Unanswered. These aren’t the questions you want to guess on. I hope there’s a second book!

My my little book, you are in a word, weird.

When Shallow Graves landed on my door step, I was E.X.C.I.T.E.D. The first time I saw this book I immediately thought, "NOW THAT, IS A ME BOOK!" Even after finishing, I still feel like this is a ME book. But while I liked the idea behind it, the weird and creepy undertone, I just didn't love it.

Could you imagine "waking up" in a shallow grave; mouth full of dirt and no recollection of where you are, how you got there or how much time has passed? Then imagine, killing a man and absorbing all this memories? Yeah, creepy for the win. This was all in the first few chapters!

Breezy is what some would call a Zombie (without the whole, eat your brains thing). There are many other "monsters" in the book, which I enjoyed simply because it gave us a variety of characters. I also thought the magic aspect was different, too. But some didn't make sense. Whether or not it flew over my head is anyone's guess.

There are many different suspenseful parts that are weaved throughout the book that leave you hanging on and trying to decipher. What happened to Breezy? Why is she the way she is? What is her purpose? Who the heck is Mother???

So why didn't I love it? Well.... Shallow Graves started out with a bang and the potential to go to new heights. But somewhere around the half way part, things just got.. boring. THEN! Picked up exponentially towards the end and then... over. Don't get me wrong, I love the way it ended. It left a lot open for the reader to think about Breezy's path. But the characters were underdeveloped and the lack of depth to the cult, the magic and well, the monsters, kind of deflated me. I just feel like we were given enough to not starve but never get full.

Obviously, my thoughts are a jumbled mess, but the gist is, I liked parts, disliked others and it was overall, just okay. I did enjoy the creepiness, and I love weird things so BONUS.

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
