Salvation Day

A lethal virus is awoken on an abandoned spaceship in this incredibly fast-paced, claustrophobic thriller.
They thought the ship would be their salvation.
Zahra knew every detail of the plan. House of Wisdom, a massive exploration vessel, had been abandoned by the government of Earth a decade earlier, when a deadly virus broke out and killed everyone on board in a matter of hours. But now it could belong to her people if they were bold enough to take it. All they needed to do was kidnap Jaswinder Bhattacharya—the sole survivor of the tragedy, and the last person whose genetic signature would allow entry to the spaceship.
But what Zahra and her crew could not know was what waited for them on the ship—a terrifying secret buried by the government. A threat to all of humanity that lay sleeping alongside the orbiting dead.
And then they woke it up.

I received this book via a Goodreads giveaway and am very grateful for the gift! This book was actually released on my birthday so thought that was a cool coincidence.
I thought this book was really good. Very suspenseful and graphic and scary and exciting. Unlike some of the other reviews I read, I think having the book take place in such a short time frame was great because it helped build the urgency in the plot and ratchet up the danger level a bit.
All in all I thought the book was excellent and the only thing I would like to see would be a prequel to explain more of the history of the UC33-X probe and the human colonists from the past missions.

This book was a fast paced space action thriller. In general I like sci-fi and space related topics, but this was the first one I would have classified as a thriller. It keeps the reader on their toes and leaves you with a slightly dark outlook on the future of mankind. I enjoyed how the characters, while they seem divided between teams of good and evil start to blur the boundaries by the end of the book, possibly making a larger statement on morality in general.
Something that bothered me at first was how the "virus" that is described on the main space station reminded me of the Pax virus in the movie Serenity. Thankfully there are some unexpected twists that make it a little more original and unique. That being said, if you enjoyed Serenity I think you would appreciate the overall plot and interesting cast of characters in Salvation Day.
