As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone...except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova's allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

“Blends sci-fi and action like a young adult X-Men novel, asking what it means to be a hero and what it means to be a villain.” —Paste Magazine

“Beyond the capes and masks is a strikingly grounded story of star-crossed would-be lovers, deception, and the recognition that most of humanity exists between the extremes of good and evil.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

I enjoyed this book for the most part.

I think I just don’t like the whole villain vs. superhero idea. The fact that (especially in this book) identities are not hidden and the fact that you’re either a superhero or a villain lords over you and determines the reason for every little thing that you do. That’s one thing that rubbed me the wrong way.

The other thing is that it was dull. It was a lot of introduction and not a lot of action.

I did enjoy it, though. Oftentimes when I had to adult and live my everyday life, I found myself thinking about the world of Renegades and about Nova and Adrian. It was a very interesting plot, even though I had something totally different in mind when I’d first heard about this story coming out.

Even though it was very drawn out with a lot of build up to the actual story, it was necessary and very amusing to see how everything played out.

This book made me love Marissa Meyer. I'm not usually a sci-fi fan, but this book was so well done that I have to love it. The powers are cleverly written and the characters are fun. The little romance going on is cute and the story itself is intriguing. I love the idea of a villain infiltrating a hero organization, especially when that hero organization isn't a perfect utopic thing. It adds depth, knowing that the hero society is trying, but not always succeeding. And Nova really is a fun main character to follow.

This book was so addicting and it was so hard to stop once I started. All of the characters were really diverse and well written and they were all so interesting and fun to learn about. Nova is a villain, but as she becomes one of the Renegades, she starts to question her morals and allegiances more, which really shows in this book. The worldbuilding was really unique and the concept of getting superpowers from traumatic events is really interesting. Max is an absolutely adorable character but considering how important he is to the plot, something terrible will probably happen to him.
