Red Queen (The Chronicles of Alice)

The author of Alice takes readers back down the rabbit hole to a dark, twisted, and fascinating world based on the works of Lewis Carroll...

The land outside of the Old City was supposed to be green, lush, hopeful. A place where Alice could finally rest, no longer the plaything of the Rabbit, the pawn of Cheshire, or the prey of the Jabberwocky. But the verdant fields are nothing but ash—and hope is nowhere to be found.

Still, Alice and Hatcher are on a mission to find his daughter, a quest they will not forsake even as it takes them deep into the clutches of the mad White Queen and her goblin or into the realm of the twisted and cruel Black King.

The pieces are set and the game has already begun. Each move brings Alice closer to her destiny. But, to win, she will need to harness her newfound abilities and ally herself with someone even more powerful—the mysterious and vengeful Red Queen...

I liked it as a follow-up. The ending was underwhelming though.

I recieved this book through the Goodreads Advanced Readers Giveaway.

On it's own, Red Queen was an exciting book about Alice finding her own voice and strength on a perilous journey filled with monsters, evil queens, and mysterious forests and castles filled with illusions and deceptions. As a sequel to [b:Alice|23398606|Alice (The Chronicles of Alice, #1)|Christina Henry|https:d.gr-assets.com/books/1416530621s/23398606.jpg|42955198] I was a bit disappointed. The first book was filled with layers of horror as well as hope. The genuine bond shared between Alice and Hatcher was part of what made the first installment great, and I felt it was a bit lost here, in both the physical aspect of their being separated for much of the story, as well as the book relying more on the romantic feelings as opposed to their connection of two lost and broken people who in spite of everything still accept each other. Red Queen was definitely a fun book, but it didn't hold the same dark, disturbing, and substantial impact of [b:Alice|23398606|Alice (The Chronicles of Alice, #1)|Christina Henry|https:d.gr-assets.com/books/1416530621s/23398606.jpg|42955198].

Meh, okay book. Expecting more from it after reading the first book. Not bad but I didn't love it or even feel like I "had to know what happens".
