Near the Bone

A woman trapped on a mountain attempts to survive more than one kind of monster, in a dread-inducing horror novel from the national bestselling author Christina Henry.

Mattie can't remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. She must never make him upset. But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they’re not alone after all.

There’s something in the woods that wasn’t there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws.

When three strangers appear on the mountaintop looking for the creature in the woods, Mattie knows their presence will anger William. Terrible things happen when William is angry.

HOW IS THIS RATED SO HIGH?!

Wtf was this?! It’s in the horror genre but isn’t scary. It’s definitely not a thriller, it’s barely even a suspense novel. I do not recommend this book. Don’t know who would appreciate this as the first draft that it truly is.

Character development is lacking, tension is nonexistent. Dunno how this got past any editor worth their salt.

Two stars and not one because I can tell the author can write. They just didn’t commit to either villain in this book. If only the rest of the book was as good as the first three chapters.

So disappointed. If you have read this book and completely disagree. I’m so very happy you were able to enjoy the book!!!! But this bookworm did not.

This book kept me on my toes! From being isolated away from modern society with a husband who can get physically abusive to an unknown creature killing other animals outside your doors, Mattie is (understandably) scared for her life. I really enjoyed the cold, snowy, and mysterious atmosphere that the mountain setting gave this book. Wanting to learn more about what is unknown is what kept me hooked. This is my first 5-star book of the year.
