Rare Blend: A Small Town, Grumpy/Sunshine, Dislike to Love Romance (Red Mountain Series Book 1)

Rare Blend aims for a cozy small-town romance packed with wine country charm, emotional healing, and opposites-attract chemistry. Marisa heads to Red Mountain after losing both her job and stability. Then she ends up living next door to Ethan Ledger who is a guarded vineyard owner trying to hold his family business together. The setup sounds like the perfect bait for contemporary romance readers. There is a grumpy neighbor, forced proximity, slow-burn tension, and late-night texting. Unfortunately, the writing never rises above familiar romance clichés making the entire book feel more like a collection of popular BookTok romance moments stitched together than a fully developed novel. The biggest issue was the dialogue. Nearly every flirtatious exchange felt painfully scripted and unnatural. Characters constantly spoke in exaggerated romance novel banter that made me cringe instead of swoon. I kept wanting conversations to sound like real people instead of characters performing romantic tension at each other. Ethan especially falls into the brooding romance hero mold without much personality outside of being emotionally unavailable and attractive. Marisa had more potential because her career setback and strained family dynamics tried to add emotional depth. The novel rarely explored those situations beyond surface level. The romance also moved too quickly for me to buy into the emotional connection. Ethan and Marisa spend so much time circling attraction that the relationship itself never develops enough essence. The late night texting and telenovela marathons were cute in theory. Their intimacy never felt convincing because the writing relied so heavily on romance genre shorthand. Instead of building chemistry naturally, the novel constantly tells the reader these two are deeply connected without giving enough believable moments to support it. Vanessa Vasquez and Aiden Snow honestly saved this audiobook from being a complete disaster for me. Both narrators delivered strong performances and gave the characters far more personality than the actual writing did. Aiden Snow handled Ethan’s guarded personality well without making him sound emotionally flat. While Vanessa Vasquez brought a warmth and energy to Marisa that made her easier to root for. Their performances added polish to scenes that otherwise would have felt painfully awkward on the page. Rare Blend felt like a debut novel written by someone who binge-read contemporary romance and tried to recreate the formula without understanding why those stories work. The ingredients were technically there with the wine country setting, broody CEO, career burnout, and small town healing. The problem is none of it felt fresh or emotionally grounded enough to stand out. Pick this up if you like small-town contemporary romances, grumpy x sunshine dynamics, neighbors-to-lovers tension, cozy late-night texting scenes, and wine country settings with open-door spice.

I FREAKING ADORED THIS BOOK! So I love a small town romance but honey this book had me in a complete chokehold. It was the Love story or love stories. It was lighthearted, it was funny and it was also a slow burn but not too slow. It was just the right amount of slow burn for me.

Marisa is a queen. I loved her internal thoughts about everything. I loved how strong she was and how open of a person she was. She really didn’t take crap from Ethan at all and it made me appreciate a strong woman character who had her own issues to work through. I adored how she quickly adapted to Ethan once things got better for them. She really cared about him and cared about his needs. I just felt like her character was very real and set a tone for someone who learns to love their partner throughout everything.

ETHAN !!!!! Amazing man. Just the sweetest of book boyfriends. I actually loved his grumpiness in the beginning because it made his character development really well thought out. I also love the representation of mental health and that it was something that was apart of his everyday life. It was very accepted by his family and Marisa which made him feel human. I didn’t feel like it was overused at all. Ethan eventually comes to realize that he can enjoy life and I appreciated how Marisa showed him that.

As a couple they are just the cutest pair. Watching their love story was so surreal. I fell in love with them as well and just wanted them to win. Towards the end, when they have to make a decision, I really appreciated how it was handled. There wasn’t this dramatic break up that would cause a lot of emotions. It was him giving her space to let her decide while also recognizing that he didn’t want to lose her. I was sobbing alot.
The spice in this book was AMAZINGGGGGG. It was actually written more in a romantic way that just natural spice in my opinion. It also was just super sexy. Loved it alot.

I would say this is one of my favorite reads of 2024. I will absolutely be reading it again and buying a paperback to add to my collection. Highly recommend this read literally to anyone looking for a book to bring light to your day. It was fun, cute, sexy and above all a true romance story. It had its highs and lows of a relationship which made it so realistic.

Rare Blend is Michelle Naomi Mosley's debut novel that follows Marisa and Ethan. Marisa is a Mexican American woman who recently finds that her boyfriend was cheating on her, she was let go of her job and has been living with her pregnant best friend. In the room thats being converted into a nursery. She is just struggling and is not sure where to go from the low she finds herself at. Her father convinces her to come out to Red Mountain to stay until she is able to get back on her feet, and she decides why not? Her life cant get any much worse than it is right? HA! Not when she meets Ethan due to a minor incident and turns her world more upside down than the underground!

Ethan is the new head of his family's winery after his father retired. He really didn't want to be the face of the winery due to his issues with anxiety, but is trying to fill the shoes he thinks he needs to fill. He has also swore off dating due to a failed relationship that completely changed his entire life. But when a beautiful woman comes crashing into his life, and god forbid ends up being his neighbor, it gets really hard to say no to love.

I loved their love story so much. The slow burn, the banter, the fall (when it finally happens) was just perfect. This reminded me of me and my husbands relationship so much in the way they interacted with each other. I also loved Marisa so much, I saw myself in her so much. The constant people pleasing and hoping you are living to others expectations. As a hispanic woman you tend to have these expectations placed on you from family and society that you feel you can never meet. I felt her emotions very deeply. Especially when her and her father finally get to talk, that made me so emotional. My soul needed that since my father isnt in the picture.

I loved that Marisa never made Ethan feel like he was other because of his anxiety. The way she always would ask him if he needed time or space to help ground him was just beautiful to see. He seemed to get "beat up" by his siblings at times due to his anxiety and at times they seemed to ignore that he needs extra care due to the anxiety that can cause panic attacks.

Overall I gave this 5 stars and I loved it just so so much. I feel like words cant express how much I loved this story and Marisa and Ethan together. It was just beautiful and tear inducing.
