“There was a persistent rumor, it seemed, that the princess had left no fewer than ten bodies buried in her back garden in America. But she had assured Dolly that she had gone straight and had no plans to murder anyone in our town.”

I picked this book up mainly because I thought the cover was beautiful, and it ended up being a very sweet read that I ultimately enjoyed—so +1 for impulse buying!
There were moments throughout this novel—told as a series of vignettes concerning different events and people in the narrator’s neighborhood—that reminded me of both Shirley Jackson and Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
While the story didn’t demand my attention from start to finish, I don’t think that was the point of the book in the first place. It was an enjoyable read, and each chapter felt like a tiny piece of a small puzzle. It all added up into a satisfying break from louder, longer stories—and I feel more refreshed after reading it!
