I'm FINALLY done! I mostly liked it once I got past the fact that it was really a romance more than focused on being a historical fiction/time travel book.
It's long, obviously that is the first thing you'll notice about it at over 800 pages, but there is not a single page that doesn't progress the story. IMO, this is one of the best romantic time travel novels ever written. I read Drums of Autumn, a later novel in the sequel, years ago and it left enough of an impression for me to still remember it enough to finally pick up the first one. This too, I'm sure, will stay seeded in my mental library for years to come.
People disappear all the time... Many of the lost will be found, eventually, dead or alive. Disappearances, after all, have explanations... Usually.
Soon after returning home from WWII service as a nurse, Claire Randell is suddenly transported from 1945 England to 1743 Scotland. Her best chance for survival is by marrying the dashing warrior Jamie Fraser. And the marriage has to be real. In every way (nudge-nudge-wink-wink). What begins as a forced arrangement soon turns to mutual respect and finally gives way to passion.
This book is the longest guiltiest pleasure in which I have indulged this year. I was hooked right away and absolutely loved the relationship between Claire and Jamie.
A lot is wrong here. Violence and sexual assault, verbal abuse, captivity, forced marriage, problematic treatment of homosexuality, and on and on. Claire putting herself and others in danger; annoying. Not to mention that 1940s Claire ALREADY HAS A HUSBAND... But so much is right, too. The tenderness, the humour, the bantor, the chemistry, the passion, the adventure. What's a girl to do?
Wait... lemme go read some of the bad reviews... okay... all done. I agree with many of the bad reviews. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...
I enjoyed almost every minute of this beautifully written trashy romp.
