📖🎧📺 For 2025, my book club is focusing on book-to-screen adaptations, and Outlander was our February BOTM. I didn’t vote for it, but I was open to giving it a try. Unfortunately, I struggled… a lot. I restarted the ebook three times, then tried immersion reading, but nothing clicked. The audiobook didn’t help either. I couldn’t stand the narrator’s voice. Finally, I ended up parallel reading along with the show, which was the only way I made it through. It wasn’t until chapter 15 that I found anything remotely interesting, and even then, it felt painfully slow. The show had the same pacing issues, it took until episode 7 for me to feel engaged. Honestly, I cringed so much that I’m convinced I’ve gained new wrinkles. The only thing that kept me watching was the actor who played Jamie. Otherwise, I had no real investment in the story. I’m shocked I didn’t DNF it, but I wanted to see how well the adaptation held up.
Was the book better? Not for me.
Was the show better? Yes, but I still have no desire to continue past season 1.
Being a bit OCD I finished this book despite the fact that I had a lot of reservations about half way through. I certainly would not rush to read any more in this series. I was offended by what I considered a rape scene between Jamie and Claire about a third into the book. My favorite genre is historical fiction and this is more of a love story. As one friend said it's a bit like Fifty Shades of Scotland.
It's been a while since I've read it, but I really enjoyed this book! I thought that the characters were wonderfully written and that they showed growth over the course of the story. I also liked the idea of time travel and how that was woven into the story. There were also very good twists in the plotline that I didn't see coming. It's great when a book can surprise you instead of following the "norm" in storytelling.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series and find out all the crap that happens to Jamie and Claire.
