One By One

A heart pounding, twisting thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Housemaid and The Coworker!

One by one, they will get what they deserve...

Claire Matchett needs this trip. It will be a break from work and raising children. A chance to repair her damaged marriage. A week of hiking and hot tubbing with friends at a luxurious hotel in the woods, disconnected from the pressures of real life.

Then, on a lonely dirt road, Claire's minivan breaks down. With no cell reception, the group has no choice but to walk the rest of the way to their remote accommodation. But the forest is dark and difficult to navigate and, hours later, they are lost. Hopelessly lost.

As they venture deeper into the woods, the members of their party are struck down mysteriously, one by one. Are they being hunted? And by what--or who? As Claire's dream vacation descends into a nightmare, something becomes clear: only one of them will return home alive.

A taut story of betrayal and survival from New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden that will leave you wondering if there's any way out of the woods...

I’ve heard so much about this author from friends on how well she writes and how gripping her stories can be. This is the first book I’ve read from her and probably won’t be my last. Knocked this out fast! Super easy read and had me twisting and turning in emotions the whole time. There was several times I did find myself slightly bored with the writing. I did feel it was a little “run on” but other than those times. I do believe I liked this book and story very much. I found myself picturing what the characters looked like in my head. Almost like I was watching this play out so to speak. Definitely do recommend this easy read!

Whew. This one was giving messy for the sake of messy, not because it made any damn sense. We had cheating, lying, manipulative friendships, passive-aggressive couples, and somehow every character managed to be both unlikable and uninteresting at the same time. Like… y’all doing all this in a snowy cabin? Be serious. It set itself up like a classic locked-room thriller — isolated mountain house, blizzard outside, people start dropping dead. I was ready. But instead of sharp twists or suspense, we got weird character choices, unnecessary drama, and a twist that flopped harder than a wet towel. I didn’t care who the killer was by the end. I just wanted them all to get snowed in forever. And let’s not even talk about the ending — it was rushed, forced, and somehow still anticlimactic. Freida, girl, you know you’ve done better.

I love Frieda normally but this was pretty disappointing for me personally. Didn’t feel like the twist was plausible and couldn’t stay connected with the plot, especially towards the end.

This is the second book I’ve read by this author, I really enjoyed this one. There was always going to be a twist coming and it was a good one. Having thought about the book afterwards there are a couple of things that I don’t think were finalised I.e who sabotaged the car - if anyone? And the synopsis says only one returns but actually that’s not factually true. Still a good read and would recommend.
