3/5 stars. The writing felt a bit juvenile and I didn't *love* the characters. The dialog often felt predictable as did the tropes ("trope soup"). The last 25% of the book was the best, felt slow prior to that. It had all the elements of something I would love but somehow fell a little flat. It could be just a lot of world building. I may or may not read the second, I'm not sure yet.
