My Vampire Plus-One

Nothing sucks more than fake dating a vampire in this paranormal romantic comedy from the USA Today bestselling author of My Roommate Is a Vampire.
Amelia Collins is by definition successful. She would even go so far as to say successfully single. But not according to her family, and she's tired of the constant questions about her nonexistent dating life. When an invitation to yet another family wedding arrives, she decides to get everyone off her back once and for all by finding someone--anyone--to pose as her date.
After a chance encounter with Reginald Cleaves, Amelia decides he's perfect for her purposes. He's a bit strange, but that’s fine; it'll discourage tough questions from her family. (And it certainly doesn't hurt that he's very handsome.) For centuries-old vampire Reggie, posing as her plus-one sounds like the ultimate fun. And if it helps his ruse of pretending to be human, so much the better.
As Amelia and Reggie practice their fauxmance, it becomes clear that Reggie is as loyal to her as the day is long, and that Amelia’s first impressions could not have been more wrong. Suddenly, being in a real relationship with Reggie sounds pretty fang-tastic.

enna Levine’s sophomore novel, “My Vampire Plus-One,” is the second installment in the “My Vampires” trilogy. Thirty-four-year-old CPA Amelia Collins is a classic type-A personality. She excelled in college and keeps her life meticulously organized, including her spotless office. Focused on her career, Amelia has no time for dating, especially after her last boyfriend cheated on her. When her parents express concern about her lack of a social life and remind her of her cousin’s upcoming wedding, Amelia impulsively lies, claiming she has a boyfriend to bring to the event. What began as a sarcastic remark spirals out of control when her family takes her seriously.
Reginald "Reggie" Cleaves, on the other hand, is a carefree prankster, constantly dodging accountability for his past mischief. He’s currently on the run from The Collective, a vigilante vampire organization hunting him for a fire that killed eight sires over a century ago. While fleeing, Reggie collides with Amelia, scattering her paperwork. The two part ways, only to cross paths again when Amelia enlists Reggie to pose as her boyfriend for the wedding.
As Amelia and Reggie spend more time together to convince her family their relationship is real, Amelia is also juggling a chaotic work project—sorting through the disorganized tax records of a nonprofit client. Meanwhile, The Collective inches closer to catching Reggie as Amelia edges nearer to uncovering the nonprofit’s financial issues.
Levine’s second novel brings back the quirky humor of its predecessor, but it falls short in character development and world-building. The story leans heavily on Reggie’s outlandish fashion and childlike behavior, while Reggie’s backstory and the complexities of the vampire world remain thinly explored, leaving readers with lingering questions. Additionally, inconsistencies between the first and second novels are confusing—though vampires are supposedly weakened by sunlight and nocturnal, both male protagonists are often outside and awake during the day. The wedding, intended as the story’s climax, feels rushed and underwhelming.

So much fun. This series is very sweet and cute, and I enjoyed this entry just as much as the first. There are some awkward bits of humor and dialogue, but the charm makes up for it.
Content Warnings:
Moderate: Cursing, Sexual content, and Blood
Minor: Death, Violence, Murder, Fire/Fire injury, and Injury/Injury detail
