Mistborn: The Final Empire (The Mistborn Saga, 1)
Now with over 10 million copies sold, The Mistborn Series has the thrills of a heist story, the twistiness of political intrigue, and the epic scale of a landmark fantasy saga.
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark. Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot. But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed. This saga dares to ask a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails? My first Sanderson done! I truly loved this book - up until that last sentence which was just too damn cheesy. Ugh. But everything else, great. Excited to continue on with the series to see what happens next with the empire and my new friends.
Absolutely loved every bit of it, from the falling ashes, to the mists, and oh, Allomancy. Terrismen are pretty cool too, to be honest! Vin's character development is fantastic, and the rest of the crew are just plain amazing. With their strengths and trust, there was nothing that could have run them down. Even though bits of the story were gruesome, I felt the twists that followed really brought this story to a whole new level. Can't wait to read the next book!
Persuaded to read this by a friend whose recommendations I take pretty seriously, there is no room for regret. This book has it all -- an interesting universe, great character development, an interesting plot, and several excellent twists.
The only problem with this book is that it is long and takes a while to really get rolling. One of the plot points is something called "Allomancy," where certain people can ingest metals and use them to their advantage. For me, however, I had a hard time following some of the more intricate Allomantic sequences. I read most of this book through audiobook, and that helped quite a bit. When I tried to read one of those scenes off the actual page, it really bogged me down.
Stick it out, though. I couldn't let this book go. I started it in May on audiobook, but left it for two months. But I couldn't just stay away. I had to come back and finish it. And now, I have to finish the series. I need to know what happens! I bet you will too, if you read his book.

I completely understand the Brandon Sanderson hype now, this book was absolutely phenomenal. The worldbuilding, the magic system, the characters and their development, the relationships they build, all of it was amazing. I can't even pick just one character I loved in this, there were so many that I connected with and was so invested in. I can't recommend this book enough honestly, and I'm so excited to continue on with this universe.
The world building, political intrigue and character development is top tier. My favorite character was definitely Ham and Breeze, they provided balances to Kelsier INSANITY and Vin is still a child and is growing trying to figure out who she wants to be and who she has to be.
If you love a good heists and a created family, this is a must read.
