Mediocre

From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller So You Want to Talk About Race, an "illuminating" (New York Times Book Review) history of white male identity.

What happens to a country that tells generation after generation of white men that they deserve power? What happens when success is defined by status over women and people of color, instead of by actual accomplishments?

Through the last 150 years of American history -- from the post-reconstruction South and the mythic stories of cowboys in the West, to the present-day controversy over NFL protests and the backlash against the rise of women in politics -- Ijeoma Oluo exposes the devastating consequences of white male supremacy on women, people of color, and white men themselves. Mediocre investigates the real costs of this phenomenon in order to imagine a new white male identity, one free from racism and sexism.

As provocative as it is essential, this book will upend everything you thought you knew about American identity and offers a bold new vision of American greatness.

Although I can agree to some extent that white men have made everything in America (pretty much the world) center around their needs and comfort. I cannot agree that everyone else needs to wait until white men acknowledge their wrongdoings so that we can move forward. We (POC) have the power to change history, and I don’t believe that white men have been leading the charge since the beginning of time. If we truly want to change the legacy of America that is dominated by white males, we would have to create a new America. I’m not inciting any form of violence but my point is that we have the same power to rule and change our society. I love the historical research provided in the book. A lot of the history shared was new for me and eye-opening. I felt like the last chapter about black men and football has an easy solution for people of color - don’t play. If black bodies are being used to bring in millions of dollars to universities and coaches, the easy way out is for all black men to stop playing and find something else to do with their lives. I believe if POC were to leave America in mass, it would crumble the nation. The problem I see is not racism but rather a spiritual issue at the root of greedy people who are seeking to keep another group down while at the same time depending on their labor. That’s how this country started and was built upon. In order to dismantle the system we need to stop giving those who are greedy the resources to feed on.
