Into the Drowning Deep

New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

The ocean is home to many myths,

But some are deadly. . .

Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy.

Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

2nd read through: Still very much enjoy this book. It's a little slower than I remember, but the scifi is riveting and makes it all worth it.

A solid mermaid horror story! I really enjoyed how this book delved into some marine biology without becoming too dense. Personally I’m already a fan of underwater horror settings, so it was easy to win me over for this one.

3.5 stars - According to UNESCO only 5% of the ocean has been explored, which, to me, makes the ocean an absolutely terrifying place and the perfect subject for a horror novel. Enter: Into the Drowning Deep!

Seven years ago The Atargatis was found empty and adrift at sea. No bodies were ever recovered, but footage of /something/ was. Now The Melusine and her crew of researchers are sailing back to the Mariana Trench, back to those very same waters, in hopes of uncovering their secrets.

Balancing all these characters meant switching between POVs, and in a story that could easily seem repetitive with an obvious ending, the swapping of narrators was a fun and interesting way to introduce new information and keep things feeling fresh.

I don’t want to give away too much, so I’ll just leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book. I think it sums the vibes up quite nicely

I really like this take on mermaids. I was guessing the whole time, story kept me on my toes. I felt like I was watching a really good movie. The way the book was written just made it feel immersive. I need to know what happens between the humans and the sirens.
