In the Woods: A Novel (Dublin Murder Squad)

Description
The bestselling debut, with over a million copies sold, that launched Tana French, author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter and "the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years" (The Washington Post).

"Required reading for anyone who appreciates tough, unflinching intelligence and ingenious plotting." --The New York Times

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox--his partner and closest friend--find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past.

Richly atmospheric and stunning in its complexity, In the Woods is utterly convincing and surprising to the end.

In the Woods was a mysterious novel whose investigation explored not just the crime scene but the human condition. It slowly introduced me to its characters by showing me their relationship with each other through casual touch, tone of voice, and side glances. It told multiple stories and intertwined them seamlessly. Each story enriched the others. I...read more

Listened to this audiobook on a road trip and I enjoyed the narrator and the way it was written. The ending seemed a bit cobbled together and left you with a lot of unanswered questions. Left me a bit frustrated

Very Irish. Very interesting. This story is based on a crime drama surrounding 2 heinous crimes in rural Ireland, but what I found the most compelling were the portrayals of the friendship between the two primary detectives and the psychology they used to solve the crimes. Lots of hard lessons in this one, and some pretty realistic detective work.

An intricately woven detective tale with interesting characters and unexpected twists. There are points in everyone’s life that they wish they had made a different choice, but were too blind or ignorant to notice what they were doing at the time and this story hits that point strongly home.

It would have been nice if the ending had been more resolved regarding Adam’s childhood experience, but that in itself is more realistic and a general life les...read more
