The Searcher: A Novel

A New York Times Bestseller
A New York Times and NPR Best Book of the Year

"This hushed suspense tale about thwarted dreams of escape may be her best one yet...its own kind of masterpiece." --Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post

A "taut, chiseled and propulsive" (Vogue) novel from the author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter and the bestselling mystery writer who "is in a class by herself." (The New York Times)

Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

"One of the greatest crime novelists writing today" (Vox) weaves a masterful, atmospheric tale of suspense, asking what we sacrifice in our search for truth and justice, and what we risk if we don't.

Loved it. Accidentally read The Hunter first as my first Tana French book so I went back to the beginning and finally made it here! And 2 chapters in, I realized I missed The Witch Elm, so back up to that; then re-reading The Hunter to finish up. I’ll probably re-read them all. Adore her writing.

Takes place in Ireland. A retired cop from Chicago settles down there. He be friends, a young person, help them learn carpentry. Well they deal with their troublesome home life. The locals pretty much except him, but their lies underneath a lot that doesn’t get shared out in the open. Trey’s older brother goes missing, and the retired cop sort of takes on the case to find out what happened. Not a lot really happens in the case, sometimes it got a little boring.

As an avid reader of all of Tana French’s novels, this was exactly what I was expecting. Her mysteries tend to be slow to build up, but build up they do into an intense climax that is nothing like what you were expecting. Knowing the pace of her books going into this one, I enjoyed it, but the mystery itself was not quite as interesting as others have been. Definitely worth a read if you’ve enjoyed her other novels.

This novel is a slow burn mystery. There is very little action - instead it is written in the same pace as the protagonist - the intrepid Chicago cop - methodically investigating a local murder. Cal Hopper is a man's man and comes to the rescue of a young girl looking for her missing brother. He slowly investigates different clues which takes him to different encounters with the locals in his new community. The book is well written and the characters are well thought out. It kept me interested all the way through, but if you are looking for a quick action mystery, this is not for you.
