Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things

#1 New York Times Bestseller

“This brilliant book will shatter your assumptions about what it takes to improve and succeed. I wish I could go back in time and gift it to my younger self. It would’ve helped me find a more joyful path to progress.”
—Serena Williams, 23-time Grand Slam singles tennis champion

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again illuminates how we can elevate ourselves and others to unexpected heights.

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Hidden Potential offers a new framework for raising aspirations and exceeding expectations. Adam Grant weaves together groundbreaking evidence, surprising insights, and vivid storytelling that takes us from the classroom to the boardroom, the playground to the Olympics, and underground to outer space. He shows that progress depends less on how hard you work than how well you learn. Growth is not about the genius you possess—it’s about the character you develop. Grant explores how to build the character skills and motivational structures to realize our own potential, and how to design systems that create opportunities for those who have been underrated and overlooked.

Many writers have chronicled the habits of superstars who accomplish great things. This book reveals how anyone can rise to achieve greater things. The true measure of your potential is not the height of the peak you’ve reached, but how far you’ve climbed to get there.

Have you ever wondered how to maximize your potential or what does it takes to excel? Through his review of *Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things,* Nitin shared insights on harnessing one's hidden potential and becoming successful. _Educational systems determine success._ Citing the example of Finland's education system - acknowledged as the best in the world, author emphasizes the need for cooperation rather than competition. Rather than rewarding high performing individuals, high performing groups are recognized. Vijaya ma'am added her personal experience and shared the extraordinary vision of her school Principal who never awarded first three places in athletics but rather considered *all* students crossing the finish line in certain stipulated time as winners. _Brainwriting and not Brainstorming_ For organizations to effectively ideate and thereby succeed, leaders should not brainstorm but rather gather teams' thoughts in writing thereby encouraging the quiet and introvert ones to also contribute and not be lost amidst the loudest of them all. _Aim for excellence and not perfection_ Hiring managers should hire candidates who have shown significant progress rather than consistent high performers. Guru added his perspective on assessing "learnability quotient* besides IQ and EQ. As individuals, we should aim to constantly improve instead of trying to be perfect. Perfection can, at times, be very difficult and lead to disappointment. Shilpa presented her personal account of seeking review at 80% completion of task instead of presenting the completed work. Your almost done version might be good enough for someone else. _Seek Advice and not feedback_ Individuals are expected to seek *feed forward* or advice from their mentors/managers/coaches and not an account for their past mistakes and successes. Aruna added that asking for concrete actionable items rather than vague appraisals is beneficial. _Get a coach if you love thyself_ The author emphasized the need for a coach/mentor to constantly guide you and course correct you. _Make minimum number of mistakes_ The author stresses that the best way to learn is to make mistakes, at times allow yourself to be mocked upon, and put yourself through the discomfort in order to learn something or be better at what you do. Are you ready to try one or all of the above strategies? If you do and observe a difference, then feel free to share your experience and success story with us all, and don't forget to thank Nitin 😊

Just brilliant! It still baffles me when reading an academic book is entertaining, diverting and amusing! Adam Grant is a guarantee for a fast paced, clever, relatable concept that has you thinking, pushing boundaries of past beliefs and thriving to transform into an even better version of yourself. I adore his tongue in cheek tone, his wicked sense of humour (see graphic on p. 184), the lightness and easy approach that just clicks and takes you on a grand journey getting to know yourself better and start trusting your own development possibilities. A must read for anyone - and I do not say this lightly!
