Hidden Nature

The #1 New York Times-bestselling author presents a novel about an injured cop who must fight to bring down a pair of twisted killers…

Natural Resources police officer, Sloan Cooper, and her partner had just taken down three men preying on hikers in the Western Maryland mountains. Driving back, she pulled in at a convenience store—and walked right into a robbery in progress. One gunshot from a jittery thief was about to change her world.

After being shocked back to life on the operating table, she has a long recovery ahead, so she moves back to her parents’ peaceful house in Heron’s Rest. As for the boyfriend who dumped her via text while she was in the hospital, good riddance.

She may be down, but she’s not out. So when a woman vanishes, leaving her car behind in a supermarket parking lot, Sloan searches online for similar cases. She finds them, spread across three states. Men and women, old and young—the missing seem to have nothing in common. And the abductions keep happening.

Luckily, the new man in her life shares her passion for solving this mystery. But it will take every ounce of endurance to get to the dark heart of this bizarre case—and she's willing to risk her life again if that's what it takes to stop the horror.

I love Nora Roberts and I am surprised I’ve spent years reading others. My welcome back to reading NR, with this amazing book. Nora has a knack for creating characters that are realistic and relatable. This is certainly the case here, with the multiple layers of the main character, Sloan, who must fight back from a near-death experience, shot off-duty when she popped into the mini-mart. Her long rehab back showed her stamina and courage, surrounded by her family. Though her tool of a boyfriend dumped her while she was in the hospital, no great loss there. She was bound for a better relationship - enter Nash, and his brother, Theo. These guys become part of the family as they fall in love with Sloan and her sister, Drea. But there is danger lurking as people are ‘taken’ and never found. It’s up to Sloan, a law enforcement officer, who is quite good at investigating connections, to hit on the motivations that the kidnappers have used to serialize the missing victims. Of course, Sloan is right in their sites, because she survived her trauma, being brought back to life medically. And the crazy couple are taking their victims, artificially brought back to life second-chancers, as they want to usher these people ‘home’, where they think God intends them to be. You just knew it would end as it should. But it was fun to see the teamwork between Sloan and Nash, and the ultimate takedown. Lots of page-turning action - I didn’t want it to end!

Nora had me reading this book in a couple of days! The story pulls you in from the beginning! The characters are strong and likeable, and the antagonists are exactly what you want them to be, scary! The story was well written and I found myself cheering Sloan on during her recovery. I told my husband that this story ranks up there with some of my favourites by Nora Roberts!

Nora Roberts never misses when it comes to romantic suspense, and Hidden Nature is no exception. This one strikes just the right balance between gripping tension and heartfelt romance. The characters are likable and relatable, and I was fully invested in their journey. The antagonists, though? Absolutely chilling. Their motives were so disturbing I had to skip a few scenes—definitely not for the faint of heart!

If you love your thrillers with a side of romance and just the right emotional depth, this one’s for you. I definitely recommend it to fans of romantic suspense. Nora Roberts novels are my guilty pleasure, and Hidden Nature reminded me exactly why.

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the E-ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.
