The Awakening: The Dragon Heart Legacy, Book 1 (The Dragon Heart Legacy, 1)

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts begins a new trilogy of adventure, romance, and magick in The Awakening.

In the realm of Talamh, a teenage warrior named Keegan emerges from a lake holding a sword--representing both power and the terrifying responsibility to protect the Fey. In another realm known as Philadelphia, a young woman has just discovered she possesses a treasure of her own...

When Breen Kelly was a girl, her father would tell her stories of magical places. Now she's an anxious twentysomething mired in student debt and working a job she hates. But one day she stumbles upon a shocking discovery: her mother has been hiding an investment account in her name. It has been funded by her long-lost father--and it's worth nearly four million dollars.

This newfound fortune would be life-changing for anyone. But little does Breen know that when she uses some of the money to journey to Ireland, it will unlock mysteries she couldn't have imagined. Here, she will begin to understand why she kept seeing that silver-haired, elusive man, why she imagined his voice in her head saying Come home, Breen Siobhan. It's time you came home. Why she dreamed of dragons. And where her true destiny lies--through a portal in Galway that takes her to a land of faeries and mermaids, to a man named Keegan, and to the courage in her own heart that will guide her through a powerful, dangerous destiny...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Nora Robert’s isn’t an author I normally read, but gave this one a chance and it didn’t disappoint. I didn’t mind the slow start, which gives you a look inside the life of Breen, a mid -20s teacher who hates her job and is completely over anxious about everything and loaded with self doubt. Which during the story you get a view of how, at the hands of her mother, she came to be so full of doubt and anxiety.

Loved the imagery scenes and world building that took place in Ireland and Talamh. Loved the lore, myths, and magic that was taught to Breen and how she starts to change how she sees herself, starts to discover her true self after she learns more about her family history and heritage.

Her BFF, Marco, who is the iconic gay best friend who starts to push Breen to have courage to do the things she wants in life. Everyone deserves a friend like Marco ❤️

Thankfully, I had the second book on hand because the end of the first book leaves you on a cliffhanger and makes you want to dive right into the second book in eagerness to see what happens.

This series as a selection for my book club, and I was sadly disappointed by all 3 books. Lack of a cohesive plot, poor character development, and generally just boring. The ending was the biggest disappointment of all.

I almost gave up on this book because the first half was SO long and drawn out, it didn't seem to be building to anything or going anywhere. I only kept going after reading reviews and learning others felt the same way. A good editor could have made it much shorter and the entire book much better. That being said, I'm glad I kept at it because it drew me in to the world of the Talamh and was great escape reading. I devoured the second book and can't wait for the third.

Philadelphia and Ireland, and then Talamh, the land of the fae. A young bland school teacher with a great heart and solid friends is nit picked by mom at home her whole life. Her life changes in mysterious ways and finds herself transported to a magical realm after arriving in Ireland when she goes to discover more about her long gone father. My soft spot for Irish magic made this hit perfectly. Definitely thinking about this series months later still. Will need a physical home in a bookshelf after reading on Libby.
