THOUGHTS:
So I had read this when it first came out, way back in 2011 and remembered nothing of it. In fact, I had forgotten all about the series itself. Until I saw the new covers. I decided to have a re-read and leave my review.
GOOD:
So the one thing I liked about this is that it's long, but a quick read. I never read a dull moment. From conversations, to fighting, and mystery, it was fast and always moving. It worked perfectly with the plot and I love books like this.
“So? What are you going to do about it? Throw your mashed potatoes at me? I'm consumed by terror.”
Alexandria is awesome. She's kick ass, always has a witty one liner, and is fierce against any force. I felt so connected to her, because in a way, I relate to her so much. She's literally me in the way she talks and handles situations! She's returned to school to learn how to fight so she can one day rid the world of daimons. Her dream is to be a Senetal, the highest form of a warrior in their world. But she's gotta take more classes since having been pulled from the school and she's not sure if it'll happen.
Especially with Aiden, one of the high up fighters.
“Okay. I’m ready to move onto something else, like practicing with knives or defense against the dark arts. Cool things.”
“Did you just quote Harry Potter?”
I love their interactions. From the moment they're together, we know they belong with each other. They fight through words-and weapons-and deeply care for each other. I was rooting for them since the beginning, but knew they'd have a tough go. Because Pure's (children of Hematoi, gods) can't be with Half-Bloods (Hematoi who got it on with a human). This was an interesting development in the story. It's not hard for them because he's her teacher in a sense, but add in a law of them being unfit for each other, and it becomes tough.
The side characters are all note worthy, but one specifically is Seth. He's what they call a Apollyon. He's got like super powers and is basically the Brittany Spears of their world, a la 2000's. But, Seth and Alex are more intertwined then they could have seen and everything just got more tough.
I love the fighting scenes, and the daimons. It's so neat to have so much action and love and craziness in one book.
BAD:
There isn't much bad that I found in this book. But I did notice something right off the bat, and maybe this isn't considered "bad" but I'll put it here anyway:

I feel like I have a book crush on Jennifer Armentrout. I was introduced to her from a friend on Goodreads, who screamed at me for a long time to read Lux. (and honestly, that is still my favorite) Admittedly, I haven't read ALL her books though but it seems like the more I read her books, the more my crush grows. To be honest, I was terrified to read this series because a lot of people have compared it to Vampire Academy. And it is. Like, a lot. I feel like my crush just did something nasty and I am backing away with my hands up. Sad, sad day my friends.
I hate to compare books. But there are times when two are just SO similar it's crazy. I won't bore you with just how similar these books are. I don't really need to. Vampire Academy and Half Blood are two sides to the same coin. Different on the outside, yet bred from the same metal. Whew my metaphors are terrible.
OK. So, similarities aside, I thought Half Blood was awesome. Jennifer is a rock star writer. She has a wild imagination, she's great at creating real characters that are awesome and equally flawed. The angst and heart pounding action. I am always sucked in. I really don't know how she does it, but I will read anything she writes.
I loved the mythology in this one. It was fascinating and just fun to learn about. I was a little put off about the way the halfs were treated though. Everyone has something that effects them one kind of way; slavery and discrimination are two of mine. Especially since the halfs were RAISED this way. It's sad and sickening.
Alex is a pretty bad ass girl. She's tough, non nonsense and quite funny. She feels responsible for her mother's death and the turn of events and feels responsible to right that wrong. She is selfless and brave (which makes her equally stupid too) and her love for her friends and mother was admirable.
I liked the slow building attraction/relationship between her and Aiden. I wasn't put off by their age difference either. Their situation makes for some great angst and tension, but I loved it. Aiden is one of those... too perfect gents. Sweet and kind yet hard-core and bad ass. He looks past Alex's defenses and really gets under her skin. I couldn't find a single "flaw" in his character. But since he has that "too perfect" persona, that makes him flawed in my eyes. I did appreciate that he didn't treat the halfs any different.
And just a note, I don't like nor do I trust Seth. That is all I have to say about him.
Overall- Although the similarities to VA kind of irritated me, I thought this was a well written, interesting read. I got Pure through ARCycling so I am going to read that soon. Jennifer Armentrout fans and fans of mythology will adore this.
