Fear the Drowning Deep

Some secrets are better left at the bottom of the ocean.
Sixteen-year-old Bridey Corkill longs to leave her small island and see the world; the farther from the sea, the better. When Bridey was young, she witnessed something lure her granddad off a cliff and into a watery grave with a smile on his face. Now, in 1913, those haunting memories are dredged to the surface when a young woman is found drowned on the beach. Bridey suspects that whatever compelled her Granddad to leap has made its return to the Isle of Man.
Soon, people in Bridey’s idyllic village begin vanishing, and she finds an injured boy on the shore—an outsider who can’t remember who he is or where he’s from. Bridey’s family takes him in so he can rest and heal. In exchange for saving his life, he teaches Bridey how to master her fear of the water—stealing her heart in the process.
But something sinister is lurking in the deep, and Bridey must gather her courage to figure out who—or what—is plaguing her village, and find a way to stop it before she loses everyone she loves.

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
As a self proclaimed cover snob, I have no qualms admitting that this cover caught my eye. It promises a chilling, eerie read and guess what? The pages within delivered!
I love a good small town setting – but add in an eerie back drop of sea monsters, dead bodies in a historical setting? Sign me up. Fear the Drowning Deep is an addicting read from start to finish, and I couldn’t get enough.
I’m a character driven person – so I love it when I not only adore the main character, I come to admire them as well. Bridey is strong, loving, and even though she is looked down upon by the town for her outlandish “stories,” she continuous fights for them. I admired that about her. One could easily say, “the heck with you!” and just go about their day and protect only the ones they love. She has such tremendous growth as a person, and that above all is what I loved most. I also loved that her family played such a significant role in the story. They’re a tight knit bunch. In addition, there are close friendships as well. I just loved seeing all the relationships present shown in a positive light.
There is also a romance, and while I did like it; it’s sweet, romantic moments put a smile on my face, I felt it was the weakest relationship in the story. Both Fynn and Bridey fall hard and fast, and there aspects to their relationship that were predictable. However, that didn’t hinder my overall enjoyment of the book. And that ending! <3
With the eerie setting, mysterious happenings and strong relationships, Fear the Drowning Deep will be a hit among many. I highly recommend it!
