Faithful Place (Dublin Murder Squad)

From Tana French, author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter, “the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years” (The Washington Post), the New York Times bestseller called “the most stunning of her books” (The New York Times) and a finalist for the Edgar Award.

Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was a nineteen-year-old kid with a dream of escaping hisi family's cramped flat on Faithful Place and running away to London with his girl, Rosie Daly. But on the night they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn't show. Frank took it for granted that she'd dumped him-probably because of his alcoholic father, nutcase mother, and generally dysfunctional family. He never went home again. Neither did Rosie. Then, twenty-two years later, Rosie's suitcase shows up behind a fireplace in a derelict house on Faithful Place, and Frank, now a detective in the Dublin Undercover squad, is going home whether he likes it or not.

Of the three books I read in the Dublin Murder series this was my least favorite. I actually really liked the main character but the plot really dragged on for me. It was more about the dysfunctional family than about the actual mystery.

Tana French is quickly becoming a favorite author. Her writing is absolutely brilliant and her characters are fabulous.

I'm not sure how Tana French does it, but each time I start one of her novels i'm certain it can't be as good as the last.  Yet here I am again blown away.  The pull wasn't strong with this one, I didn't like Frankie from The Likeness so it took longer for me to let down my guard.   He won me over eventually through Holly. Their interactions were both lovely and flawed. There is something so real about the communities and people that it is hard to believe this isn't a true story plucked straight from a ghost in an abandoned basement on Faithful Place. After the authors note had concluded I was left alone with whether its better to settle or be unsettled forever and the hard painful understanding of the difference from not wanting to go home and not being able to again.
