Eve: A Gripping YA Dystopian Adventure of First Love and Survival After a Deadly Virus

The first book in Anna Carey’s chilling Eve trilogy, Eve is perfect for fans of The Handmaiden’s Tale.

After a deadly virus wiped out most of Earth's population, the world is a terrifying place. Eighteen-year-old Eve has grown up isolated from the rest of the destroyed world in an all-girls school. But it isn’t until the night before her graduation that she discovers what her duties will be once she graduates.

To avoid the horrifying fate that awaits her, Eve flees the only home she’s ever known. On the run, she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Eve knows she shouldn’t trust him, but he slowly wins her confidence…and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

Eve is the first book in Anna Carey’s trilogy, full of romance, adventure, sacrifice, all set in a near future that is both wonderfully strange, and chillingly familiar.

Eve by Anna Carey is one the best dystopian novels I've read in a long time.

A virus that descriptively resembled a flesh eating concept with attributes of the flu and hand, foot and mouth (my word!) has wiped out most of the Earth's population and now the world is a horrid place. There are still those that live within the city walls ruled by a King, but the rest of the population fends for themselves or works as slave labor to rebuild the New America.

Young girls are privileged to attend special schools that teach them the history of the world before the plague. Eighteen-year-old Eve, orphaned by the virus, has never been beyond the guarded gates of her school. She and several hundred other orphaned girls have been promised bright futures with the education they are receiving within the school walls. But, it all seems to simple and the night before graduation Eve learns a horrible truth about the girls' future upon graduation.

With the help of a teacher (isn't there always one that won't follow the rules!) and an unlikely friend, Arden, Eve flees her school in the night tackling a long and arduous quest, survival her only motive. Along the way she meets Caleb, a young man living outside the city walls. Eve is resistant to his help at first as the school taught her the evils of man, but through patience and a little charisma Caleb slowly wins her trust. Eve, eventually, can't help but fall in love with him. Just when life seems to be worthwhile again, the government soldiers emerge with a vengeance for finding Eve. She's not the only girl to escape the school, but she's the most important one.

This trilogy starts off strong with good characterization and quick-paced plot. Anna Carey creates a very "Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood" feel to the context of the story, but tells it in a much more captivating way.

This hits a little closer to home in present times.

But overall, this isn't anything new. Controlling women in a dystopian society is expected.
I don't understand how Eve went from being sweet and innocent to being a dick so quickly.
Also, this is the first boy she's ever interacted with and she's suddenly madly in love? wtfrick

I'm also getting Peter Pan vibes from this. Was that on purpose?
