Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, 5)

Only the greatest sacrifice can turn the tide of war.
War is brewing in the fifth book of the #1 bestselling Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius as war looms on the horizon. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves increasingly at odds with those who don't. With her heart sworn to the warrior-prince by her side and her fealty pledged to the people she is determined to save, Aelin will delve into the depths of her power to protect those she loves. But as monsters emerge from the horrors of the past, dark forces stand poised to claim her world. The only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may take more from Aelin than she has to give, a quest that forces her to choose what-and who-she's willing to sacrifice for the sake of peace. This book was an outright action movie. It was hilarious and had such sweet moments followed by some of the best action scenes I've read in a long time. Absolutely in love with nearly every other character. That ending though. I thought I knew angst and sadness, I was wrong. That ending wrecked me.
Romances are all the same trope (enemies to lovers), sex scenes are all the same type of sex (biting, growling, scratching, hating the person you're with so much that they actually become sexy?). Maas doesn't seem to know how to write any other type of relationship dynamic. Characters who had depth in the first 4 books fell flat. There are absolutely no stakes as the team of characters just keeps winning everything despite almost dying every time. There wasn't much keeping me interested in the last book after this one but I powered through (I tandem read this with Tower of Dawn).
Dude. This series is quickly becoming my favorite that I have ever read. The world building, the character development, the intensity of the plot, the battles, the magic... just everything. This book was good to the last page, and I can't wait to read the next one.
I shed an ALARMING amount of tears in the last 100 pages of this book. AELIN GALATHYNIUS, YOUR MIND!!!
