Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, 1)

Lethal. Loyal. Legendary.

Enter the world of Throne of Glass with the first book in the #1 bestselling series by Sarah J. Maas.

In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She has no love for the vicious king who rules from his throne of glass, but she has not come to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three murderers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she will be released from prison to serve as the King's Champion.

Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. And a princess from a faraway country will befriend her. But something rotten dwells in the castle, and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying mysteriously, one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival-and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

Thrilling and fierce, Throne of Glass is the first book in the #1 bestselling series that has captivated readers worldwide.

Starting Point
One thing I really liked about this book was the starting point. So many books of this plot style start from the beginning where main character must learn new skills to become great or achieve their goals. However, Throne of Glass starts off with Celaena already having skills. She’s already strong. And that was a great alternative from the age-old path.

Interwoven Plots
While it got a smidge confusing sometimes, I really liked the interwoven plots. There wasn’t just one plot. There wasn’t just one character with something they wanted, but a variety of wants and stakes, which offered a variety of plots. Many, if not all of them, wove together and a good handful inter-competed with each other. It added an extra layer to the story that kept my interested.

Predictable
I’ll admit that the plot, the relationships, and the characters’ secrets were rather predictable. The subtle foreshadowing that was supposed to allude to the eventual reveals weren’t so subtle. Well, at least to anyone paying attention. Thus, it was a little disappointing to know the ending before it unfolded, especially when I wasn’t too happy about what was going to happen.

This book was amazing and full of action and I loved the combat scenes and that amazing ending. After reading this I don't even know what characters to trust or to hate.

This was so good. I’m really excited to read the rest of the series and I’ve heard it only gets better! I love Celaena and the boss that she is. She doesn’t need to be saved because she’s capable, strong, smart, and can do it herself. Let’s go!!! The King’s champion is quite the task for someone. There were beautiful friendships made within this book and a wonderful foundation laid for this world and complicated kingdom. I see a love triangle forming? Dorian is charming and Chaol is so good too!! Also, I can’t wait to learn more about magic or gifts that are to come. Great character development and definitely a book to start out a series. I know so many questions will be answered. I want Celaena’s backstory, although it’ll be so sad. Give me more info about Nehemia. We hate the king. Duh. Where does Chaol stand. How is Dorian so willing to just let it be?!!! Aghhh also gimme more details on the mark!! Immediately diving into the next one.

Audiobook listen. It was honestly a bit hard for me to get into, but it got better. I am used to SJM’s later writing, so this felt a little lackluster comparatively. But the ending was pretty good and it definitely set up the rest of the series. I waited to finish the entire series to write my review, otherwise my rating would have been lower, TBH.
