Emily of New Moon

From the author of Anne of Green Gables, the first book of the beloved Emily trilogy—recently seen on Netflix’s hit show Russian Doll!

Emily Starr never knew what it was to be lonelyuntil her beloved father died. Now Emily's an orphan, and her snobbish relatives are taking her to live with them at New Moon Farm. Although she's sure she'll never be happy there, Emily deals with her stern aunt Elizabeth and her malicious classmates by using her quick wit and holding her head high.

In this first volume of the celebrated Emily trilogy, Lucy Maud Montgomery draws a more realistic portrait of a young orphan girl's life on early twentieth-century Prince Edward Island. Along with Emily Climbs and Emily’s Quest, Emily of New Moon insightfully portrays the beauty and anguish of growing up.

✨ Reading mood: cozy classics, imaginative heroines, and stories that feel like coming home. If you love Anne of Green Gables, you might just fall in love with this story too. 💛 Author: L.M. Montgomery Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 stars) My Review: As a longtime lover of Anne of Green Gables and, more recently, The Blue Castle, I knew I wanted to explore more of L.M. Montgomery’s writing. When I discovered Emily of New Moon during my search for more by this author, I instantly knew it needed to be my next read. It was such a beautiful experience! From the beginning, I was swept away to Prince Edward Island and into Emily’s vivid inner world. Her imagination, sensitivity, and curiosity reminded me so much of dear Anne Shirley, and I found myself warming to her almost immediately. The story begins with heartbreaking loss as Emily’s beloved father passes away and she is sent to live with her mother’s relatives at New Moon. Montgomery has a way of asking us to part with beloved characters, Emily’s father here and Matthew in Anne of Green Gables. Somehow that loss deepens our attachment to those who remain, and it certainly did for me. Life at New Moon is very different from the loving world Emily shared with her father. While I struggled at times with the strictness of Aunt Elizabeth, the gentleness of Aunt Laura and Cousin Jimmy beautifully balanced the story and offered Emily the encouragement and stability she needed. By the end, we even see glimpses of Aunt Elizabeth’s quiet affection for her. Emily’s friendships were also quite entertaining and added humor and warmth to her journey. I especially loved her interactions with Father Cassidy. Those moments brought such charm to the story. Emily’s imagination, determination, and love of writing made her such a delightful character to follow. I couldn’t help but be completely charmed by her. I thoroughly enjoyed her adventures and cannot wait to continue the series to see where her story leads next. A beautiful, heartfelt classic that warmed my heart and one I will absolutely recommend again and again! 🍃 💭Question for my fellow book lovers: Do you love Anne or Emily more? Or have you read both?

Emily of New Moon, eloquent, curious and imaginative! What more is there to say?
This is a classic that has aged well and is almost timeless in it's story-telling. This book made me fall in love again with reading children's lit. I enjoyed how L.M. Montgomery crafts poetry into novel, not just by Emily's little creations but also how the prose moves along each page. I found myself entertained, with Emily's adventures and creativity and how she very lovingly looked at the world. This is definitely one of those books you need to slowly digest to understand each sentence, and allow the accuracy of the words sink in to paint a clear picture of what is going on. It's not something you sit by and read in an afternoon, it's definitely a bit of a dense read even for a children's classic. So worth it.

Lots of love for this one <3
